Mrs.
Ethel Alice Porter, 58, wife of P.M. Porter, Sherif of Grayson County,
died at her home, 223 N. Highland, Sherman, Wednesday night of last
week. She had been ill of a heart ailment for several weeks. Funeral
services were held at the residence with Dr. J.A. Ellis, pastor of
First Baptist Church of Sherman, officiating. Burial was in West
Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Porter was born September 5, 1880 in Plainview
community, Grayson county, daughter of Will C. and Alice Whitley
Elliott. She was married at Sherman November 7, 1897, to Pleas M.
Porter, who survived her. She was a member of the First Baptist
Church. Mrs. Porter is survived by her husband; 3 sons, Joe M. and
George W. Porter of Sherman; and SIdney P. Porter of Alhamba,
California; 2 daughters, Mrs. Pat Brackett of Gainesville and Miss
Loyce Porter of Sherman; one brother, Lee Elliott of Sherman; 4
sisters, Mrs. Walter Keys and Mrs. Glenn Phillips of Sherman; Mrs. John
Caldwell of Marionville, Missouri; and Mrs. Bert Wallen of Los Angeles,
California; and 5 grandchildren. Pallbearers were G. Prentice Gafford, Merle Dicken, Fitzhugh Mangrum, Ollie Neathery and Virgil Evans of Denison.
FORMER GRAYSON COUNTY SHERIFF DIES
Veteran law officer, Pleasant M. Porter,
79, one time sheriff of Grayson County, died Wednesday at 9 p.m. in a local
hospital. He had been ill for the last three years. His home was 620 S.
Charles. He was a Mason for 50 years. Funeral was held Friday at 10:30 a.m.
in Waldo Funeral Chapel. Rev. Orrin D. Reed, associate pastor of the First
Baptist Church, officiated. Pallbearers were Hank Moody, John
Harper, Fritz Mangrum, Charlie Steel, Ed Bilger, and Robert Dean. Burial
was in West Hill Cemetery. Mr. Porter was a native of Grayson County
and son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Robert Porter. He was the husband
of the late Ethel Alice Elliott Porter. Before moving back to Sherman in
1914, he served as city marshall in Hollis, Oklahoma for 15 years. He was
a city policeman here for eight years and constable of Precinct 1 for 10
years. He was elected sheriff of Grayson County in 1939, serving two terms.
Due to ill health, he retired in 1943. He was a member of the First Baptist
Church and A.F.& A.M. Masonic Lodge 117. Survivors are three sons, Joe M. Porter
and George W. Porter, both of Shrman and Sidney P. Porter of Lynnwood,
California; two daugters, Mrs. Pat Brackett of Gainesville, and Mrs. Sven
Henningsen of Copehagen, Denmark; four brothers, Bill Porter, Jim Porter, and
George Ed, all of Pottsboro and Charlie Porter of Denison; three sisters,
Miss Lizzie Porter and Miss Lottie Porter of Pottsboro; Mrs. Harry Orr
of Sherman; six grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services for George William
Porter, 80 year old retired machinist of 414 N. Binkley, who died Tuesday
at a Sherman hospital, were held at 10 a.m. Thursday at West Hill Cemetery.
Rev. Richard Braun of the First
Presbyterian Church officiated, with arrangements by Waldo Funeral
Home.
Mr. Porter was born 26 October 1900
in Grayson County, son of Mr. and Mrs. Pleas Porter, and married Marguerite
Engman on Febuary 17, 1923 in Sherman. He retired from Hardwicke-Etter
Company in 1966 after working 42 years as a machnist.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World
War I and a member of the Travis Masonic Lodge 117 and the First Presbyterian
Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Bill
(Marilyn) Haire of Spring; sisters, Mrs. Loyce Henningsen and Mrs. Pat
Brackett, both of Gainesville; brother, Sidney Porter of South Gate, California;
and one grand-daughter.

Graveside services were held at 11:30
a.m. Wednesday at West Hill Cemetery for Mrs. Marguerite E. Porter, 77,
housewife of 414 N. Binkley, who died Monday at a Sherman hospital.
Services were conducted by Rev.
Richard Braun of the First Presbyterian Church, with burial under the direction
of Waldo Funeral Home.
Mrs. Porter was born in 1901 at Durant,
Oklahoma, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Engman and married George William
Porter February 17, 1923 in Sherman. She was a member of the First Presbyterian
Church.
Survivors are her husband; daugher,
Mrs. Marilyn Haire of Houston; and one grand-daughter.
Pallbearers were Kirk Eubanks, Bill
Meredith, George Sofey, Tom Jefferson, Frank Bentley, Bob Wiley, Clyde
L. Hall and Frank Trau.
The family requests that memorials
be made to the American Cancer Society or the Masonic Children's Home.
