Thursday, July 22, 1920 pg. 5 JOHN L. LEGATE, CANDIDATE FOR DISTRICT CLERK, DIES AT MIDNIGHT WEDNESDAY John L. Legate, 38 years old, candidate for the Democratic nomination for District Clerk in Saturday's primary election, died at midnight Wednesday night at St. Vincent's Sanitarium from the effects of appendicitis. He was taken ill Sunday night and was seriously sick from the start. An operation was performed Wednesday in an effort to save him but the disease was so far advanced that he died in spite of everything that could be done. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mae S. Legate, and two children, a little son and daughter. His father, T.J. Legate, and three sisters also survive him. Just two weeks ago his wife was operated on for appendicitis and is still at the sanitarium. Funeral services will take place Friday afternoon, probably at 4 o'clock, from the family home at 112 North Binkley street. BIOGRAPHICAL John L. Legate was born February 20, 1884 on a farm five miles east of Sherman, the son of T.J. Legate, who still resides in that community. He was educated in this city and in Denison, where he attended business college. He was married to Miss Mary Scott on June 3, 1907 and since this has resided in Sherman with the exception of three years spent in Dallas. For a number of years he was employed in a responsible position with the Hardwicke-Etter Company of this city, before becoming a deputy in the office of the clerk of the District Court, and was a candidate for the Democratic nomination in Saturday's primary election for the office of district clerk. He was actively engaged in his campaign for this office until last Saturday when he became suddenly ill. John Legate was known as a man of sterling worth, affable disposition and upright Christian character. It is not idle words to say that news of his sudden illness and death came as a profound shock and carrying with it the deepest sorrow to all who knew him. He stood high in every walk of life in which he was known - business, social, church, and more recently, political. He was an active member of Walnut Street Church of Christ, and had been for a number of years. To the bereaved wife, who is herself ill at St. Vincent's Sanitarium, the two children, the father and three sisters, the most sincere sympathy of all will be extended.
