June 9, 1910 Sherman, Texas, June 9 -- Malcolm Hunter of Sherman, who was shot by a hotel man named Hoffman at Muskogee, Okla., last night, died a few hours afterward. His father, J. P. Hunter, and brother Morris Hunter, left at once for Muskogee. Mary E. Woods 1848 - 1911 James P. Hunter 1845 - 1940 Co. G. 21st South Carolina Infantry CSA Denton Record Chronicle June 6, 1940 LAST CONFEDERATE VETERAN IN DENTON CLAIMED BY DEATH James Polk Hunter, 94, the last Confederate veteran in Denton, died Wednesday afternoon in a local hospital. He had made his home with his son, Morris Hunter, for the past 12 years. Funeral services were conducted in Shepard Funeral Home Friday, with Dr. Frank Weedon, pastor of the First Baptist Church, of which Hunter was a member, had charge of the services, assisted by Rev. O.N. Duncan, pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Burial was in Sherman. Surviving besides his son, Morris, there is: Andrew J. Hunter, Misses Anne and Emily Hunter of Muskogee, Oklahoma; Mrs. John Bradley of Oklahoma City; and Mrs. Esther H. Harris of Orange, California; and 10 grandchildren. He was born in Florence, South Carolina June 10, 1845 and was married to his late wife, Miss Fannie Morris, February 17, 1875 in South Carolina. He came to Texas in 1892 and settled in Sherman, engaging in farming. Hunter served during the Civil War with Beauregard's Army, Head's Brigade and the 21st South Carolina Regiment. He was discharged in 1865. He had been affiliated with U.C.V. camps at Sherman, Dallas and Denton, and was the last of the roll of the Sul Ross Camp of U.C.V. which disbanded several years ago. Along with other last survivors, he had been an honoree at annual meetings for veterans and their widows. In the Denton County Fair last fall, he rode on the Katie Daffan float, representing the fast disappearing Confederate Army.
