November 9, 1962 pg. 2 Long Illness Fatal for Mrs. Verna Southern Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Daniel Gray C.M.E. Church for Mrs. Verna Southern, 81, Negro, of 2004 S. East, who died at 5:15 p.m. Thursday after a long illness. She was en route to a Sherman hospital when she died. Rev. I.B. Brooks, pastor of the church, will conduct the services. Burial will be in West Hill Cemetery, directed by Grayson Funeral Home. Mrs. Southern was born November 8, 1881 in Collin County, daughter of Sloan and Eliza McKinney. On December 1, 1901 she married Henry Hickson. Later she married Ed Southern of Sherman. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Survivors are a son, Arthur Hickson of Sherman; 2 sisters, Mrs. Mattie McKinney and Mrs. Helen Hall, both of Sherman; 3 brothers, Rev. O.T. McKinney and Thornton McKinney, both of Ft. Worth; and Leslie McKinney of Allen; 1 grandson and several nieces and nephews.
