Porter, Jr. 26 November 1922 - 21 June 1944 Texas 2nd Lieutenant 355 Army Air Force Fighter Bomb Squad WWII Sherman Democrat January 5, 1945 pg. 7 Previously reported missing, Lt. Robert K. Porter, Jr. was killed in action over Germany on June 21, 1944 according to a message from the War Department to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert K. Porter, Sherman Route 1. The report was received from the German government through the International Red Cross. Lt. Porter enlisted in the Air Force in June 1942, reporting to Santa Anna, California in December. He was commissioned at Luke Field on November 3, 1943, trained for combat duty in Tampa, Florida and went to England in March 1944. He was a member of the 9th Air Force and with this organization took part in the invasion of France. His last letter to his parents, dated June 17, said that he had completed 18 missions over enemy territory. A graduate of North Dallas High School, Lt. Porter attended Texas A&M College for one year. A brother, Phil Porter, is with the Marines in the Pacific area. Sherman Democrat August 4, 1949 pg. 2 Lt. Porter was born in Dallas, Texas, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.K. Porter, Sr. of Sherman, Texas. He was a graduate from North Dallas High School and attended Texas A&M College one year. At the time of his enlistment, Lt. Porter was employed at Guiberson Corp of Dallas. Lt. Porter enlisted in the Air Force in 1942 and received his commission at Luke Field, Arizona on November 3, 1943. He was assigned to overseas duty in March 1944. He was a P-51 fighter pilot, assigned to the 9th Air Force, 355 Fighter Bomb Squadron. He participated in the invasion of France and completed 18 bombing missions and 41 sorties. He received the Purple Heart and Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters. He was survived by his parents; 2 brothers, William L. and Phillip B. Porter; one sister, Mrs. E.V. Jarnagin, the former Mary Porter. He was the grandson of Dr. and Mrs. W.L. Lively of Dallas. Funeral services were held at Dannel Funeral Home with Dr. H. Marvin Law of Douline, Louisiana officiating, assisted by Rev. T.M. Jenson.
