The Denison Daily Herald Wednesday, April 4, 1906 pg. 3 THE DAY AT SHERMAN Necrological Sherman, Texas, Apr. 3 - Joseph Totten, for more than 30 years a resident of Grayson County and for the greater part of that time a resident of Sherman, died this morning at 6:15 o'clock, at his home, No. 716 East Houston street, aged nearly 85 years. Death was caused by general debility and a complication of other diseases, He had been confined to his bed for about 4 months and had been in failing health for a longer period. During his last sickness he showed remarkable vitality and battled sturdily with the grim reaper. The funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock from the residence by Rev. Forrest Smith, pastor of the First Baptist Church. The interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery [sic]. Joseph Trotten was born in New York in 1821. When a boy he removed with his parents to Illinois and located near Quincy, where he lived till the year 1875, when he removed to Grayson County. For a few years he lived in the country adjacent to Sherman and about 1880 he moved to this place. He has for a long period been employed at the Washington Iron Works as a pattern maker, at which trade he was working when his health failed. He was a member of no secret organizations, but belonged to the First Baptist Church, of which he was a faithful and devout member. He leaves besides his wife, 5 sons and 2 daughters. One son, Solon Totten and one daughter, Mrs. Charles Crenshaw, reside in Sherman. The others are Lee Totten and E.E. Totten of Paris, Texas; M. Totten of Abilene, Texas; Noel Totten of Washington state; and Mrs. Anna Hedgecock of Oklahoma City. All of the children with the exception of the son in Washington are expected to be here for the funeral. The decedent leaves also 2 brothers in California. Sherman News Notes The 15th District Court adjourned this morning till Thursday on account of the death of Joseph Totten, who was the father-in-law of Charles Crenshaw, principal in a suit to be tried before the court.
