West Hill Cemetery Sherman, Texas Dallas Morning News January 17, 1897 DEATH OF AN OLD WOMAN Sherman, Tex., January 16 - One of the oldest persons in Grayson county and one of the links between ante-bellum days and the present, died at her home on West Houston street last night. Darcie Porter, colored, had no record of her birth, but from events she plainly remembered as having taken place in Virginia, her native state, coupled with evidences of her age at that time, make it generally believed that she had crossed the century mark. In 1854 she moved to Morris county, and has lived there until six years ago, when she came to Sherman. She was marked in her unswerving respect for southern ideas and customs, and on the streets she met with the universal courtesy. She never had to stand up in street cars or to cross a crowded street without an escort.
