MRS. R.E. SMITH DEAD
Sherman, Texas, Aug. 11 - Mrs. Georgia H. Smith, wife of Col. R.E. Smith of San Angelo, formerly of  Sherman, died  at the home of Mr. and Mrs. I.R. Bobbitt at 834 West Houston street at 7:30 o'clock this morning, following an illness of about 3 months duration.  Colonel and Mrs. Smith arrived in Sherman last Thursday and Mrs. Smith was seemingly much improved upon her arrival here.  Death came suddenly this morning while Mrs. Smith was preparing for breakfast.  Heart trouble was the immediate cause of death.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon about 5 o'clock from the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Weems at 826 West Houston street, followed by burial in West Hill cemetery
Mrs. Smith was 40 years of age, and besides her husband is survived by 4 children: Harold, Colvin, Dorothy, and Virginia.  She was born in Virginia but has lived in Texas for a number of years.  For about 4 years  Colonel and Mrs. Smith have lived in Tom Green County, near San Angelo, where  Colonel Smith has a large ranch and farming interests.  Colonel Smith formerly lived east of Sherman.
The deceased was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of this city.

COLONEL R.E. SMITH, A GRAYSON PIONEER DIES
Sherman, Sept. 22 - Col. Robert Emmett Smith, one of Grayson County's foremost pioneer citizens, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. O.J. Ellingson, 815 N. Travis street, at 10 o'clock Monday night.  Col. Smith had been in ill health for the past several years.  Death was attributed to cancer of the stomach.  He was 69 years of age.
Funeral services were held at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning from the  home of Mrs. Ellingson, conducted by Dr. T.A. Wharton, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, of which Mr. Smith had been a member for many years.  Interment was in West Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife and 10 c hildren, as follows: Mrs. J.M. Weems; Mrs. I.R. Bobbitt and Mrs. O.J.S. Ellingson, all of Sherman; Mrs. Noah Jones of Snyder; Mrs. Jimmie Kirkland of Dallas; Herbert E. Smith of  San Angelo; Robert Smith of Sherman and Harold, 11, Virginia, 7, and Dorothy, 5, all of Sherman.  Mr. Smith had been married 3 times and the last 3 children were by his third wife.
Mr. Smith was born in Artesia, Mississippi in 1852.   He received his education at the University of Mississippi and the University of Virginia, graduating from both institutions.  He studied law and was admitted to the bar.   He came to Sherman when a young man and had lived in this city for the greater part of the past 50 years.  He practiced law here for many years, but afterward engaged in farming and other interests.  He was one of the pioneer alfalfa raisers of North Texas, and from his remarkable success with this crop, became known as the "Alfalfa King."  He wrote many articles for agricultural papers over the country on the proper raising and care of alfalfa, and became nationally known as a result.
