 West Hill Cemetery Sherman, Texas  Herald Democrat July 21, 2013 Sherman - Private funeral services for Rebecca Shytles Brown were held Friday, July 19, 2013 at First United Methodist Church in Sherman. Dr. Jim Pledger officiated and entombment followed in the West Hill Mausoleum. Mrs. Brown, 64, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at Texas Health Presbyterian-WNJ Medical Center. Rebecca was born June 5, 1949 in Salt Lake City, Utah, daughter of Dr. Harry Shytles and Norma Jo Pierce Shytles. Rebecca graduated from Sherman High School in 1967 and the University of Texas in 1971 where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. She worked as a teacher for the Northside Independent School District in San Antonio from 1971-1972 and for the Howe Independent School District from 1972-1974. Mrs. Brown was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church in Sherman and had served as the Chairman of the Pastor-Parish Relationship Committee, Founder of Great Days of Service, Chairman of the Capital Campaign Drive, and Chairman of the West Wing Renovation Fund Drive. She was a committed volunteer in Sherman and served in numerous positions and offices including past president of the Sherman Antique Club, past president of the Wednesday Study Club, past president and reference chairman of the Kappa Kappa Alumnae Association, Ladies Waterford Society, University of Texas Ex-Students Association, American Paint Horse Association, and the American Quarter Horse Association. She was a sustaining member amd past president of both the Sherman Service League and the Needlework Guild of America. Rebecca was also a former member of the Wilson N. Jones Hospital Foundation Board, Needlework Guild of America National Board, Sherman Community Players Board, Sherman Preservation League Board, and Historic Robert's House Chariman, and Rejebian Book Review Club. Rebecca received numerous awards in her life including the Silver Spurs Award at Cheley Colorado Camps in Estes Park, Colorado in 1963; the Gold Key Award at Cheley Colorado Camps in 1963; Outstanding Young Woman of America in 1982; and the Yellow Rose of Texas in 1982. Mrs. Brown had many varied hobbies which included collecting antiques, Lalique, and Russian lacquer boxes, reading, gardening, investing and traveling. She will be remembered as an art enthusiast, food and wine connoisseur, gourmet cook, and horse lover. Rebecca was preceded in death by her father, Dr. Harry Shytles/ She is survived by her mother, Norma Jo Essin and husband, Dr. Emmett Essin, of Sherman; 2 sons, Barrett Shytles Brown MD and wife, Deborah Beatty Vest Brown, of Houston; and Bradley Pierce Brown of Sherman; sister, Jody Anders and husband, Chuck, of McKinney; brother, Don Boyd Shytles and wife, Dorothy, of Rock Port, Texas; and 2 grandchildren, Audrey Elizabeth Brown and Charlotte Waverly Brown, both of Houston.
