West Hill Cemetery Sherman, Texas The Sherman Daily Democrat Thursday, January 5, 1911 pg. 1 THE DEATH OF JNO. TALBUTT All Indications Are Mind Was Dethroned By Injuires He Realized Awful Malady The Tragic Occurrence Was Almost in Plain View of His Wife - Body Reached Sherman Last Night and Given Burial Today The body of John H. Talbutt, whose tragic death occurred at Olney, Young County, last Tuesday evening, reached the city last night about 11 o'clock and was taken to te chapel of Haynes & Sporer, at which place funeral services were conducted at 2:45 p.m. today by Rev. Forrest Smith of the First Baptist Church, after which the burial was at West Hill Cemetery. The body was accompanied by the wife of the deceased. At Dallas they were joined by Mrs. Throckmorton, mother of Mrs. Talbutt. Mr. and Mrs. Talbutt's little son, Glenn, Messrs. Ora Belden and John Pittman. The deceased was a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen and the Maccabees, holding fraternal insurance in each of them. While in general tendency the first meagre report of the death was correct, it was in error as to detail, a more accurate statement of the circumstances preceding and attending death being as follows: Some weeks since when preparing to leave a railway coach a lurch of the train threw him from the platform and inflicted severe bruises and injuries from which he has suffered a great deal. An abscess formed on one of his knees requiring repeated use of the lancet to relieve it. The attending physician at once expressed grave apprehension that his hurts would ultimately reach and affect the brain. The patient confirmed this belief repeatedly, telling his wife and friends as well as his physician that he could feel his mind giving way. Recently his wife has noticed that he frequently stood before the mirror as if in study of his face. The unusual peculiarity of his conversation on Tuesday last alarmed Mrs. Talbutt, who asked him to walk about in the yard which he did. After they went back into the house Mrs. Talbutt suggested that she prepare some coffee and securing a pail went across the dividing fence to a neighbor's cistern. After leaving the home Mrs. Talbutt heard the back screen open and saw her husband step out into the yard. He was looking for her when she stooped down to shut off the water and while so engaged she heard a shot, and saw the smoke. Running at once to the scene she found her husband dead with a pistol shot wound in the left breast, the bullet having reached the heart. The weapon, a Colt's 45, lay near him. The deceased was 48 years of age and a native of Kentucky. West Hill Cemetery Elaine Nall Bay ©2019 If you find any of Grayson County TXGenWeb links inoperable, please send me a message. |
