Charles E. "Charlie" Menton, Sr., 84 year old golf professional, passed away at his home early Friday morning, September 18, 2009. Charlie was born February 11, 1925 at Lehigh, Oklahoma, son of Ernest Joseph Menton and Stella Collins Menton. He attended Sherman public schools and graduated from Sherman High School, having achieved the designation of not missing one day of school during his entre 12 years of education. Charlie enlisted in the Merchant Marines soon after high school and served during World War II. He married LeWilma Connie Conn on November 7, 1946 at Sherman, Texas. After his discharge from the military, he went to work for the Southern-Pacific Railroad as a switchman and yard boss. In 1966 he became employed at the Woodlawn Country Club in Sherman were he would become a golf professional, director of golf and owner of the Woodlawn Pro Shop. During his years at Woodlawn, he gave golf lessons and taught numerous people the game of golf. He and his family also developed a special relationship during these years with the owner of Woodlawn, Read Omohundro and his family. Charlies was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing in addition to playing golf. He attended East Sherman Baptist Church for several years and also was a member of the Professional Golf Association (PGA) and Woodlawn Country Club. Charlie is survived by 3 sons, Charles E. "Chuck" Menton, Jr. of Pineville, Louisiana; Gary Allen Menton and Joseph C. Menton, both of Sherman; close friend and caregiver, Elaine Reynolds. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and sister, Dollie Lennox. Graveside services were held Monday, September 21, 2009 at West Hill Cemetery in Sherman, Texas.
