Church in Sherman; interment followed at West Hill Cemetery. Dr. Essin was born January 2, 1920 to Emmett M. Essin, Sr. and Lela Tallent. His father immigrated to the U.S. at the turn of the century and settled in Sherman to raise his family. When Emmett was a small child, his mother was seriously ill. As a result, young Emmett sealed his decision to become a doctor at the age of 5 in his desire to cure the sick. His father owned a clothing store in downtown Sherman and as a youth, Emmett spent many hours helping his father. Here Emmett came to know the townsfolk and developed relationships that would carry on into adulthood. After graduating from Sherman High School, he attended Austin College and graduated as salutatorian with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1940. He then went on to graduate from the University of Texas Medical School at Galveston in 1943. To fulfill his intern and residency requirements, he served at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston until 1945. Upon completing his residency, he went on to active duty serving as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed in the South Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Ajax in 1946, where he witnesses the detonation of the first peacetime atomic bomb at Bikini Atoll. After completing his service in the Navy, he returned to Sherman to set up his medical profession. At that time obstetrics and gynecologist in the North Texas area was a new specialty in Sherman, and for several years he was the only obstetrician/gynecologist in North Texas. As the first Sherman specialist in this field, he firmly believed in the value of specialized medicine. He endeavored to recruit other specialists to Sherman, and local patient care was greatly enhanced. He organized the Essin Clinic, which eventually grew to include 18 physicians. The clinic's location on N. Highland, across from Wilson N. Jones Hospital, was near the center of Sherman's now thriving medical community. Emmett was well known and respected as an insightful and caring physician who was proud of the over 6,000 babies he delivered. He aided many colleagues in the framework and organization of their practices. His influence extended beyond the realm of medical practitioners, as all those he encountered recognized his sincere compassion and regard, not only for his patients, but for the entire staff. He had a strong desire to raise awareness for infertility and felt a need for obstetric and gynecological advancements in the medical community. This led him to become a founding Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He was a past president of the Grayson County Medical Society and the Willard Cooke OB/GYN Society, a Fellow of the Texas Association of Obsetricians and Gynecologists, and a member of the Texas Medical Association, American Medical Association, Southern Medical Society, American Society of Abdominal Surgeons, International Fertility Association, and a life member of the American Fertility Society. His determination to protect the dignity of his patients led him to play a key role in creating the WNJ Bio-Ethics Committee. He served Wilson N. Jones Hospital for over 60 years, and his roles at the hospitcal included Chief of Staff, Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Chief of Medical Affairs, Chairman of the Credentials Committee of the Medical Staff, Chairman of the Ethics Committee, member of the Foundation Board of Directors, member of the Department of Surgery Committee, and member of the Medical Executive Committee. He was instrumental in establishment of the Texoma Regional Blood Center and remained a lifetime member of the Board. In 2006 the Wilson N. Jones Foundation named him the first receipient of the Emmett M. Essin Service Award. In addition to his medical interests, Emmett was involved in the local community in business, as well as his personal life. He served on the Board of Directors for Texoma National Bank, and on the American Bank Board of Trustees for over 40 years. Throughout his lifetime he attended First Presbyterian Church, and in later years attended First United Methodist. He also remained in close connection with his alma mater, and in 1987 was honored as an Austin College Distinguished Alumni. On December 31, 1939 he married his first love, Clara Margaret Cummings. Together they raised 4 children and were married for 59 years until her death. He later married Norma Jo Shytles in January 2001 and were happily married until her death.
