Blanche was born on February 3, 1919 in Grayson County, Texas, daughter of William J. Cumming and Flora T. Wright Cumming. She was the youngest of six children, who shared the family home in the Friendship community west of Sherman. The Friendship United Methodist Church and cemetery association and congregation were a vital part of her childhood years as well as an influence throughout her life. All of her four sisters and one brother as well as her parents and two husbands have preceded her in death. Blanche attended Grayson County schools and graduated from Sherman High in 1938. She began working for S. H. Kress Variety Store in Sherman as a teen and continued to be a well known and efficient sales representative for Jaco's Men & Boy Wear, Price's Department Store and Hall's Furniture over the course of the next 35 plus years. She was known for her smile, quick wit and ability to assist customers in every area of retail. On March 17, 1947 she married R. Leo Hamilton of Leonard and they made their home in Sherman and to this union one daughter was born. He preceded her in death on December 3, 1963. After returning to Sherman, Sidney White also preceded her in death on December 11, 1984. After Mr. White's death Blanche volunteered as a Pink Lady for WNJ Hospital Auxiliary giving approximately 2000 hours over nearly eight years of service. With her four sisters Blanche shared the honor of being a charter member of Grayson Bible Baptist, first known as Central Baptist of Sherman. She was a faithful member of the congregation for over seven decades. In her early retirement years, Blanche was blessed with many opportunities to travel. Gardening was her favorite past time as the many roses surrounding her home proved. She was a member of the Grayson County Senior Dance Group and enjoyed both the exercise and socialization provided by those she met there. Various friendship groups were a part of her long life as she enjoyed playing 42-dominoes and visiting the sick. She is survived by her daughter, Joyce Hamilton Griffis of Sherman; grandson, Michael Griffis and wife, Shannon, of Tallahassee, Florida; James Griffis of St. Petersburg, Florida; granddaughter, Karen Griffis Moore and husband, Mark of Mobile, Alabama; and nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of special friends, especially John Hunter whom she enjoyed as a companion for the last few years.
