- Graveside services for Mary Hart Vance, 96, who died at Wilson N.
Jones Medical Center on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002, were held Tuesday
morning, Sept. 3 at West Hill Cemetery. Chaplain David
Taylor, of the hospital, officiated. Mary died with her loved ones at her side. Mrs. Vance was born September 2, 1905 in Conroe, Texas, daughter of Andrew Levi and Jennie Bowman Hart. She married Lester Albert "Pickle" Vance in Oklahoma in 1924. The family moved to Sherman in the late 1920s and later moved to Las Vegas, Nevada for several years. They returned to Sherman in 1965, where Mary made her home until her death. Preceded in death by her husband in 1972; daughter Lodean Wallace in 1966; 4 sisters and 3 brothers, Mrs. Vance is survived by her son, Lodeal Vance of Sherman; daughter, Marie Wendeborn of Sherman; brother-in-law, Edward Vance and wife, Susan, of Sherman. (Edward, after his parents died, was taken into Mary's home and reared as her own son.) Also surviving are grandchildren, Vicki Arnold and husband, Dennis, of Plano; and Lester W. Vance of North Richland Hills; 3 great-grandchildren, Tiffany Vance, Danielle Hayes and Michael Vance; 4 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Blanche Wood; several nieces and nephews; and special family friend and caretaker, Alta Hefton. Mary had a spirit of independence and tenacity. Until recent years, she was still making jelly, baking pies and cakes, and gathering pecans from her yard. She was an avid reader and enjoyed fishing and the outdoors. She was fondly known as "Mem-Mem," a name given to her by VIcki, her oldest grandchild. The family always looked forward to the "get-togethers" and the special dishes prepared by Mary that had become "family traditions." Plans were underway for her 97th birthday celebration at a Labor Day family gathering.
