DR. J.B. STINSON, PIONEER HERE, PASSES AWAY
Was Prominent in the Practice of Medicine and Progressive Citizen.
Dr. J.B. Stinson. pioneer Sherman physician, passed away at his home, 425 North Travis street, at about 5 o'clock Wednesday morning, at the age of 82 years.
This news, passing over the city early Wednesday morning, came somewhat unexpectedly to many citizens, who, though aware of the feeble condition of Dr. Stinson, were without knowledge of his critical condition during the past few days.  With the intelligence of Dr. Stinson's passing came the realization that another of the real pioneers of the city - those stalwart men who came early to what is now Sherman, and grew up with the city to its present modern size - had passed on.  And in Dr. Stinson's death it was further realized that one of the most progressive, forward looking and worth while citizens of this type had come to his earthly end.
Funeral services have been announced to take place from the late home, 426 North Travis street, Thursday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by Dr. F.F. Brown, pastor of First Baptist Church, in which Dr. Stinson was a senior deacon and a long-time member.  The active pallbearers have been announced as follows: Gus Parrish, Clifford Hardwicke, Joe F. Etter, Stanley Roberts, W.A. Harvey and W.E. Richardson.  Burial will be in West Hill Cemetery.

SERVED CONFEDERACY
Lacking one month, Dr. Stinson had made Sherman his home for 54 years, having come to this city in December 1866, following the surrender of Lee at Appomattox, with whose forces he served during the latter days of the war, in the medical department.  "Confederate Military History" contains the following biographical sketch of him.
"Jack B. Stinson, M.D., Sherman, formerly of the medical service in the Confederate States Army, was born April 3, 1838, in Pickens County, Alabama, son of a native of Fauquier County, Virginia, who became one of the early settlers of Alabama and amassed a considerable fortune, the greater part of which was swept away by the war.  Dr. Stinson studied medicine under a preceptor, Dr. A.M. Wilkins, attended lectures at the Atlanta Medical College and New Orleans School of Medicine, and was graduated from the latter institution in March 1861.  Soon after receiving his diploma, he enlisted for the Confederate service in a company which rendezvoused at Montgomery and became part of the 5th Regiment, Alabama Infantry.  After some service at Pensacola, Florida, they were ordered to Virginia and thereafter Dr. Stinson was associated with the immortal deeds of the Army of Northern Virginia under Robert E. Lee, until the last days at Appomattox.
"On reaching Manassas Junction he was made hospital steward of his regiment, and a year later he was commissioned assistant surgeon and assigned to the 12th Alabama Infantry.  Afterwards he served in the hospitals at Richmond and during the last months of the war he was with the 41st Alabama Battalion in the trenches before Petersburg.  The last command with which he served was part of Gracie's Brigade of Longstreet's corps and participated in the famous battle of the Crater, July 30, 1864, brought on by the explosion of 8,000 pounds of powder under Pegram's salient of the Confederate lines, making a crater 135 feet long, 97 feet wide and 30 feet deep.  In the explosion and the fight which followed the Confederates lost 922 killed and wounded and the Federals between 4,000 and 5,000.
"In December 1866, Dr. Stinson made his home in Sherman and began a professional career at that city that has been attended by notable success and has won for him an honorable place among the medical men of the State.  In 1873 and 1874 he took an additional course of lectures at Bellevue Hospital Medical College, New York, where he also took the degree of M.D.
"On May 31, 1863 Dr. Stinson was married to Marie Louise Fenet, for several years a teacher in the Columbus, Mississippi, Female Institute, and --ickenville, Alabama Female Institute, and 3 children were born to them, of whom 2 are living, Cora Fenet and James C. Stinson."
During his long residence and practice in Sherman, Dr. Stinson became one of the best known and most highly regarded physicians in this part of the State.  His services were in demand over a wide section of pioneer country, and he served wherever the voice of need called him.  He retired from active practice only after he became too feeble to administer to the heavy needs of his profession.
He was active in all affairs and movements for the good of the community.
He took great interest until the last in the United Confederate Veterans local camp, Mildred Lee, of which he was historian at the time of his death.  Many souvenirs and small trophies of the great war in which he served were kept by him, and a valuable map of the Petersburg defenses which he prepared has been given to the Sherman Public Library.
Dr. Stinson was beloved by all who knew him for his strong sympathies and understanding of human nature, and about him he had gathered friends from all classes.  During much of the time of the past 2 years, while his health and strength has been failing him, he had been able to take daily walks.  He was attacked suddenly with pneumonia a few days ago and the end came quickly and unexpectedly.
