Thursday, June 12, 1919 pg. 1 SHERMAN BOY DROWNED AT KANKAKEE, ILLINOIS Howard Stafford, 14-year-old son of Prof. C.L. Stafford, of No. 720 South Maxey street, this city, met death by drowning at Kankakee, Illinois, yesterday afternoon, according to telegraphic advices received by his sisters, Misses Clara and Hazel Stafford, here last evening. The young man was employed as a newsboy on train running out of St. Louis, the place where he met death being a regular stop on his route. Howard was born and reared in Sherman, and has many friends here who were deeply grieved to learn of his untimely death. Besides his father and 2 sisters named above, he is survived by an older brother, Lieutenant Lloyd Stafford, stationed at Rio Grande and a married sister, Mrs. A.P. Utterback, living in Colorado, who was formerly Miss Glee Stafford. Sherman Daily Democrat Thursday, June 12, 1919 pg. 5 Funeral services for the late Howard Stafford will take place from the family home at No. 720 South Maxey street at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon, followed by burial in West Hill cemetery. The body will arrive in Sherman about 5:30 o'clock this afternoon from Illinois. Sherman Daily Democrat Thursday, June 13, 1919 pg. 5 The body of Howard Stafford, Sherman boy who was drowned while swimming in the Kankakee river near Kankakee, Illinois, Wednesday afternoon, will arrive in Sherman over the Frisco at 5:45 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Lieut. Lloyd Stafford, a brother of the deceased, is expected to arrive from South Texas Sunday morning and funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon. Prof. C.L. Stafford, father of the deceased, who is out of the city, has not yet been communicated with. Funeral services will be held from the family home at No. 720 Sou th Maxey, and burial will be in West Hill Cemetery.
