West Hill Cemetery Sherman, Texas Joseph S. Key 1829 - 1920 The Bonham Daily Favorite Thursday, April 8, 1920 gp. 6 IMPRESSIVE SERVICE HELD FOR BISHOP JOSEPH S. KEY Sherman, April 7 - Travis Street Methodist Church was filled with citizens of Sherman this morning when the funeral services for Bishop Joseph S. Key, who died Tuesday, were held. The impressive services were conducted by Bishop W.N. Ainsworth of Austin, assisted by Rev. T.C. Armstrong of Mart, Rev. W.D. Bradfield of Dallas, Dr. A.J. Weeks of Dallas and Rev. C.A. Spraggins of Sherman. Students of Kidd-Key College, with which the deceased bishop had been connected for more than 25 years, occupied 2 central tiers of seats. In his funeral sermon, Bishop Ainsworth reviewed at some length the life and character of Bishop Key. He credited him with have been largely responsible for the adoption of district conferences in the organization of the Methodist Episcopal church South, at the first general conference after the Civil War. Among those who sat near the casket during the service were Bishop Key's body servant, Lem Davis, a Negro referred to by Bishop Ainsworth in his sermon as being among those who feel the most personally the bishop's passing. Among the out of town ministers who attended the services were Rev. O.P. Cooper of Dallas; Rev. E.W. Alderson of Bonham, Rev. J. Sam Earcus of McKinney, Dr. S.H.C. Burgin of Dallas, W.C. Everett of Dallas, Rev. W.C. Johnson, presiding elder of the Dallas district; Dr. J.W. Gibson of Oak Cliff and others. Mrs. Jack Chase of Dallas, a granddaughter, and President Edwin Kidd of Kidd-Key College, stepson, are the only close surviving relatives of Bishop Key, besides several grandchildren in Georgia.
