They adopted and reared Miss Mae Hoard of Sherman, a niece of Mrs. Hoard. After his graduation from medical school, Dr. Hoard practiced for several years in Atoka, Oklahoma. He then went to Whitewright, where he practiced for a year before coming to Sherman in 1899. He was first associated here with Drs. I.P. Gunby and Sam King. Spurlock president of Kidd-Key College, said of Dr. Hoard that he was one of the finest citizens of Sherman, a man of the old school type, substantial and faithful to his profession. "I know of no man I have had a higher regard than Dr. Hoard," said Mayor Will Leslie. "He and I have been life long friends, not only through my own family, but through my wife's family. The practice of his profession with him was not solely for financial returns, but for the good he might accomplish. He was one of the finest characters and best man I ever knew." R.A. Chapman, Jr. said, "He was one of the truest friends I have ever had. I appreciate his friendship as much as that of any man." "In a few words I cannot express my profound regard for Dr. Hoard as a physician, a citizen and a friend," said O.D. McReynolds. "To an unusual degree he combined the qualities of a great physician, a good business man and a splendid citizen. The loss to this community is very great. To me it is personal, because his relationships to my family and to me have been very close for many years."
