West Hill Cemetery Sherman, Texas The Herald Democrat June 29-30, 2010 Born on New Year's Day, 1917, James O. Sutton passed from this life on Saturday, June 26, 2010, at Presbyterian-WNJ Hospital after contracting pneumonia. He was 93 years 5 months and 25 days young, living actively until just a few days before his passing. James was born in Pocahontas, Ark. to James and Nettie May Sutton and grew up around Kennett, Mo., choppin' cotton and plowin' a team of mules, even as a small boy. He was the third of eight children, five boys and three girls. In his early years, he earned the nickname "Peck" from a popular comic strip of the time, "Peck's Bad Boys." If "Peck" was the leader of the "Bad Boys," well, you can fill in the rest with your imagination. On January 12, 1937, he married Ruby Miller in Caruthersville, Mo. He was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II, later enlisting in the Army Air Corps, which became the United States Air Force, serving in the Korean War and making the military a career. He served with pride for 21 years before retiring at Perrin Air Force Base on January 1, 1966, at the rank of Tech Sergeant. The Suttons were the parents of three children, Ostend (Von) Sutton of Sherman, Ronald Sutton of Keller and Joanne Sutton Adams of Stephen City, Va. All three survive him, as does his wife of 73 years, Ruby. He is also survived by daughters-in-law Diane Sutton and Brenda Sutton and son-in-law, David Adams. James' brother Cloyce Sutton of Blytheville, Ark. survives him, as do older sister Jean Nicholson of Flint, Mich. and baby sister Sue Hostmeyer of Florissant, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Harry, Wayland and Vel Sutton and sister Jewel Sutton Walpole. Upon separation from the military, he found retirement boring, so he became a dispatcher for the Sherman Police Department, serving there for 18 years. His second retirement was a better fit, as he was now content to spend his days watching TV, traveling and enjoying his grandchildren. Those 6 grandchildren were the absolute delight of his life: Cynthia Sutton Hickman and Bradley and Matt (DeAnn) Sutton, Detra Sutton Mullen and Travis Sutton (Erica) and Sky Adams Noon (Brian). James was also "Pop" to 10 great-grandchildren: Robert Hickman, Kayla Mullen Brooks and Brian Mullen, Bodhi and Gracie Adams, Lauren and Landry Sutton, Braden and Bryson Sutton and Tyler Dammon. Pop met his only great-great-grandchild, Madyson Kaye Brooks, just a few weeks ago. Local arrangements are entrusted to Dannel Funeral Home, with family night on Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. On Wednesday, June 30, at 1 p.m., a chapel service will be held in the Dannel Chapel, conducted by Bro. Danny Woods of West Sherman Baptist Church. Full military honors will be afforded Sgt. Sutton at graveside in the West Hill Cemetery immediately following that service.
