 West Hill Cemetery Sherman, Texas  Denton- Funeral services for Irene Z. Skonning will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, March 19 at Waldo Funeral Home. Rev. Neill Morgan of the Covenant Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will follow at West Hill Cemetery with Kurt Dinnes, Mark Dinnes, Austin Dinnes, Westin Dinnes, Gary Counts, and Douglas Dinnes serving as pallbearers. Mrs. Skonning, 96, passed away peacefully with her daughter and oldest grandson holding her hands on Saturday, March 12 at Denton Regional Medical Center. Irene was born August 26, 1914 in Panama, Illinois to the late Joseph and Bernice Zawadzki. On October 6, 1934, Irene married Thorvald Nielsen Jr. in Crown Point, Indiana. They were married until Mr. Nielsen passed away in 1947. On July 11, 1964, Irene married Arndt A. Skonning in Chicago. They were married over 22 years when Mr. Skonning passed away in September 1986. Irene continued to live in Sherman until 2009 when she moved to Dogwood Estates Retirement Community in Denton. Irene was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was an avid reader and enjoyed staying active as a volunteer at the Sherman Public Library. Irene was a member of the Shakespeare Club and Garden Club. She was a lifelong Presbyterian and former member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sherman. She was outgoing and had never met a stranger. Irene's life was truly an inspiration to family and friends, and she will be remembered for her unique ability to make people smile and feel special. Mrs. Skonning is survived by her daughter, Nancy Dinnes and husband Douglas of Denton; two grandsons, Kurt Dinnes and wife Megan of Norman, Oklahoma and Mark Dinnes and wife Kryste of Austin; and four great grandchildren, Alexa, Westin, Austin, and Hollyn Dinnes. She was preceded in death by her parents and two husbands. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 PM Saturday at Waldo Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sherman Public Library at 421 N. Travis, Sherman, TX 75090.
