September 20, 1953 X-Ray and Radium Clinic Maintained by Dr. M. Weisburg Dr. Maurice A. Weisburg's arrival in Denison in 1950 gave this town its first exclusive X-ray and radium clinic. Before Dr. Weisburg came here, most X-ray work had been done in the private offices of physicians or at the hospitals. Dr. Weisburg, in addition to operating his clinic in the basement of the Barrett Building, also is radiology consultant for the MKT Employes Hospital here; is on the staff of the Madonna Hospital and is radiology consultant at Perrin AFB. He was born in Long Island, New York in 1917. After completing high school, Dr. Weisburg enrolled in the College of Medicine at New York University. He graduated in 1941 and for the next year and a half served his internship at the Metropolitan Hospital in New York City. Before he had an opportunity to serve his residency, he went into service and put in 3 years in the Army in Europe. He then followed with his X-ray therapy at King's County Hospital. After receiving a fellowship from the National Cancer Institute, Dr. Weisburg came to Denison. He was married 1942 to the former Gloria Labowitz of New York. The couple have 3 children: Eric, Alfred, and Candace. Dr. Weisburg is a member of the Grayson County Medical Association, the Texas Radiological Association, the American College of Radiology and is a diplomat of the American Board of Radiology. The Weisburgs reside at 902 W. Morton and have a summer home in Thompson Heights of Lake Texoma, a house they ultimately hope to enlarge for full-time occupancy. Maurice
A. Weisburg M.D. died on October 28th at his home In Santa Fe, New
Mexico after a short illness. He was 91. Maurice was born in Long
Island, NY in 1917. He graduated from the New York University School of
Medicine in 1941.
Dr. Weisburg was a veteran of World War II and served as a doctor in the Army Air Corps in Europe, attaining the rank of Captain. Prior to the war he served his internship at the Metropolitan Hospital in New York City. After the war, he served his residency in diagnostic X-Ray at Bellvue Hospital in New York City and in X-Ray therapy at King's County Hospital. During his residency, he met his future bride, Gloria Labowitz, a nurse at Bellvue Hospital. In 1948 Maurice and Gloria moved to Denison, Texas where he opened the town's first X-ray and radium clinic. He also served as radiology consultant to the MKT and for Perrin AFB. He practiced medicine in North Texas and Oklahoma until his retirement in 1980. Upon retirement, he and Gloria moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico. From the early 1980s, he dedicated his retirement to environmental causes, a passion he carried to the end of his life. He fought dumping radioactive waste in Carlsbad, NM. and Santa Fe's plan to take potentially contaminated drinking water from the Rio Grande River. He supported such organizations as Citizens Against Radioactive Dumping (CARD), Southwest Research and Information Center (SRIC), and Democracy for New Mexico. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Gloria Weisburg and Eric and Rachel Weisburg of Denison, Texas; Alfred and Laura Weisburg of Denison, Texas; Samuel Weisburg of Cedar Crest, NM; and eleven grandchildren - Gideon Weisburg, Daniel Weisburg, Ron Weisburg, Sarah Weisburg, Eleanor Weisburg, Jacob Weisburg, Jess Shirley, Marlena Shirley, Francesca Shirley, Abigail Weisburg and Isabel Weisburg.
