Texas.
FIRST
GENERATION. The earliest
Smith I have been able to document so far:
ARCHELAUS SMITH

buried Mt. Holly, Union Co., Arkansas in cemetery on Highway 82
married 1st on 15 February 1822 in Grainger Co.,
Tennessee to Martha 'Patsy' Warrick (ca1805, TN - bef 1860 Arkansas)
By
1837 father and son, Prior Anderson, lived in Hamilton Co., Tennessee where
they enlisted at Chattanooga, TennesseeN in October 1837 as volunteers in same
military
unit; both were discharged May 1838 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
1840 census : both Archelus and his family, along with
his son Prior and wife Rachel (Burk) had moved to Greene Co., Missouri
where
they stayed only until ca1845.
About that time both families (Archelus/Martha
with children at home and their oldest son Pryor & Rachel with their
first 4
children moved to Union Co., Arkansas
Archelaus received several land grants in
Arkansas as a reward for his military service.
Pryor A. Smith
received a military warrant in 1851 of land in Union Co., Arkansas for
his service
of October 1837 to May 1838 in Capt D.A. Wild's Co. of Tennessee
Volunteers, also called the "Florida War".

GENERATION.

He married 1839 in Georgia to 1st wife, Rachel Burk, aged 27 (1823,
Tennessee - bef 1870). Prior had enlisted in 1837 at Chattanooga,
Tennessee
just
across the border from where the Burks lived then in Murray Co.,
Georgia.
Prior
A. and Rachel had several children, but listing the two
sons that migrated into Texas, as did Prior and his
2nd wife.
Of
his several children by Martha, one son, Prior Anderson
Smith, came to Texas.

Services for J. D. Smith, 79, farmer who died 8 p.m. Thursday at his home north of Savoy, are to be held at 10 a.m.
Saturday
at the Baptist church with Rev A. R. Cunningham officiating. Mr.
Smith
had been ill two years. Mikel-Brown of Bonham will direct interment at
the
Hebron cemetery. A native of Alabama, Mr. Smith was born November 25, 1861,
son
of Mr. and Mrs. Pryor Smith. He had lived in this community 40 years.
He
was a Baptist.
Surviving
are his wife, to whom he was married 56 years
ago; 2 sons Will Smith of Sherman and Charlie Smith of
Savoy;
3 daughters Mrs Pearl Rose of Bells, Mrs Ethel Rose of
Savoy
and Mrs A.
R. Woodruff of Sherman; 33 grandchildren and 12 great
grandchildren.

Bells - Mrs Mary E. Smith, 97, of Bells died at 10:40
a.
m. Saturday in a Sherman hospital (Grayson Co). She is survived by 122
direct
descendants. Funeral services will be held at Earnheart Chapel,
Whitewright,
conducted by Rev Maurice Martin, Baptist minister of Savoy. Burial will
be in Hebron Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith was born May 15, 1866 in Lebanon, Tennessee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. K. McClendon and married J. D. Smith
June
18, 1884 in Cumby, Texas. She had lived in Hunt and Fannin counties
since
her marriage and for the past several years made her home with a
daughter,
Mrs M. L. Rose of Bells. She was a member of the Savoy Baptist Church.
Survivors are 2 sons Will Smith of Phoenix, Arizona, and Charlie
Smith of
Sherman; 3 daughters, Mrs M. L. Rose and Mrs H. M. Rose of Bells
and Mrs
Edith Woodruff of Sherman; 26 grandchildren, 66 great
grandchildren
and 25 great great grandchildren.

Bells (Spl.) - Mrs Mary E. Smith, 97, died in a
Sherman
hospital at 10:40 a. m. Saturday Aug 31, 1963. She made her home with a
daughter, Mrs M. L. Rose in Bells. Funeral services will be held at the
Earnheart Funeral chapel. She was born May 15, 1866 at Lebanon, Tennessee,
daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. W. K. McClendon. She married J. D.
Smith,
June 18, 1884 at Cumby, Texas. Mrs Smith had lived in Hunt and Fannin
Counties
since 1884.

Mrs Rose was born in Hunt County, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Jeff Smith. She was married to H. M. Rose July 9, 1909 in
Savoy.
She was a member of the Baptist Church and had lived in Grayson and
Fannin
counties all of her life.
Surviving
are her sons: A. J. Rose of Watts, Oklahoma,
Monroe Rose and Leon Rose both of Sweetwater; daughters Fae
Ford,
Mrs Treva Catlett and Mrs Elva Goracke all of Bells and Mrs Winnie Oden
of Blackwell; sisters Mrs. Lee Rose of Abilene and Mrs. Edith Woodruff
of
Sherman; 37 grandchildren, 72 great-grandchildren and 9
great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers are grandsons.

Mrs Woodruff was born February 25, 1909
in Ambrose, the daughter of J. D. and Mary Etta McClendon Smith,
attended
Ector schools and was married to Alfred R. Woodruff. She was a member
of
East Sherman Baptist Church.
Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Sam Terrana
of Fort Worth; a sister Mrs. Ethel Rose of Abilene; 3 grandchildren
and 2 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Sam Terrana, Steve Terrana,
John Ball, George Cole, Jack Baldwin and Louis Britton.

ALFRED WOODRUFF,
62 Dies, Rites Planned
Funeral services will be held at 10 A. M.
Friday in Barrett Funeral Chapel here for Alfred Rudolph Woodruff, 62,
of
916 E. Cherry, retired Lone Star Gas Co. serviceman, who died at 6:40
a.
m. Wednesday in a Sherman hospital. Rev R. M. Williams,
pastor of the East Sherman
Baptist Church, will conduct the services. Burial will be in Cedarlawn
Memorial Park. Mr
Woodruff was born December 21, 1902 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, son of
Mr. and Mrs. John Woodruff. On September 27, 1928 he married Miss Edith
Smith in Hendrix, Oklahoma. He grew up in Wolfe City and attended
school there.
He came to Sherman from Savoy in 1955 and retired last May because of
failing health. He was a member of the Baptist Church.
Survivors
besides
his wife are a daughter, Mrs. Joyce Terrana of Fort Worth; 3
grandchildren;
3 brothers, Hildred Woodruff of Lubbock, Sidney Woodruff of Ector
and Erskine
Woodruff of Marshall; 2 sisters, Mrs. Era Sikes of Lubbock and Mrs.
Mildred
Johnson of Whitewright.
NOTE: Edith and Alfred
came from Savoy in 1935 (not 1955).
