Porter and Mary Jane Montgomery moved with their families to Alabama. R.F.G. Porter died in January 1865 of pneumonia while at home in Gadsden, Alabama during the Civil War. After his death, Mary Jane and her children moved to Grayson County, Texas; joining her mother, Sarah Trimble Steele Montgomery, and her siblings who had moved to Texas in 1848.
