Dennis fought in World War II. He entered the marines in February
of 1944 and trained at Camp Elliott and Marine Base in California.
A Great American
As years pass and times change, it seems a custom that people are
forgotten. I am writing this article to preserve a life so that no one
will
forget. Dennis Earl Ferguson was a great man who happened to be a gr
eat American. He was born on November 03, 1925 at a small community
in eastern Grayson County, Texas called Pilot Grove to Luther Ferguson
and Bessie Mae Scott. Though he was named Dennis he earned the nickname
of Pete. When he was about six months old him and his family moved by
wagons
to Gunter Texas where some lived out their lives, but not Pete.
hen Pete was about 17, his father went to work at the old steam
building in Sherman, Texas. Luther told his son that there was a real
pretty
girl he should meet, but Pete really didn't want to meet anyone
who
his father thought was pretty. Pete eventually met the girl who
his father had told him so much about and soon fell in love. The girl
was
Mildred Goldston and she didn't want to have anything to do with Pete.
One day while Mildred was working, Pete went out to her car and did
something to it to where it wouldn't start. When Mildred came out to
leave,
Pete ran to the rescue and fixed her car, their first date was to the
classic movie, Gone with the Wind. On July 24, 1943 at the age
of 17, Pete was married to Mildred.
In February of 1944, Pete entered the Marines and received his training
at Camp Elliott and Marine Base in California. He went on to serve in
the
pacific during World War II and at one time was in China. After he
returned
home, Pete and Mildred started their family. On January 06 of 1948
their
first child was born, Ronald Lynn "Ronnie" Ferguson, followed by a
daughter,
Sherry Lea who was born on February 04 of 1951
. On March 25, 1955 another son, Dennis Wayne was born. Pete spent
most of his life in construction and moved around a lot. He was always
proud to have been a Marine and flew an American flag whenever
possible.
Pete's parents and siblings moved to the small community of Hamby, near
Abilene, Texas. Pete and his family eventually moved out there with
them
where a fourth child was born, David Ray, born on July 16, 1963.
Sometime
later, Pete and his family, with the exception of Ronnie, moved back to
Grayson County, Texas where Mildred's family resided.
Pete and Mildred were the proud grandparents of six: Pamela Gayle
Huff, Brandi Dawn Jeffers, Kevin Wayne Ferguson, Shauna Jo Ferguson,
Casey
Ray Ferguson and Kimberly Kay Ferguson. They enjoyed spending time with
their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mildred passed away
February
20, 1996 at the age of 70. Pete lived ten more years until May 25,
2006.
Both are buried in Van Alstyne Cemetery, Grayson County, Texas. Pete
lived
a great life, serving his country, marrying the love of his life,
raising
a family and watching them grow. Pete was a rare American who was proud
to have served his country and is forever missed by all who knew him.

Notes
for MILDRED LEE GOLDSTON:
Cause of Death: Cancer
Things were always happening to Mildred! One time she was at the
Good Will in Sherman (her favorite store) and she sat down to try on a
pair
of shoes. She went to tie the shoes and all of the sudden something hit
her on the back. Before she knew it she was laying spread eagled on the
ground and matress' were falling on top of her one by one. Everyone
Anthe
store was looking at her... to this day I'm not sure if sh
e ended up buying the shoes or not.
Mildred went to this old Gas Station one time with her daughter,
Sherry, and new grand-daughter, Pam. Sherry was in the passenger seat
and
Mildred was driving. Mildred pulled into the gas station and noticed it
was taking them a long time to come put gas in her tank. Without
hesitation
she started honking. Sherry slumped down in the seat... "It's a barber
shop Momma!" she said. "Oh!" Mildred said and drove off. Sherry said
that
all the men in the barber shop turned in their chairs and just stared
at
them!
Mildred, Sherry, & Mildred's mother-in-law, Bessie were all
out driving one day. They stopped at a red light behind a truck that
had
a man and a dog in it, and that was all. Bessie say's, "I wonder if
that's
one of them seeing eye dog's?" "I hope not!" Mildred answers her.
Feeding the Hogs:
When Mildred was a little girl & her mother was pregnant with
the twins, Loy and Troy, she went outside to help her mother feed the
hogs.
Mildred's mother, Lois, was a small woman and she was pregnant with
twins,
so she was bigger than usual. Mildred was afraid of the hogs, and when
hogs see or smell food they get excited and can get a little
aggressive.
So her mother handed her a stick and told her that she was going to
feed
the hogs and that if they started to act up to hit them with the stick.
Well, her mother went in the pen to feed them and evidently one acted
up.
Mildred got so scared that she swung the stick and accidentally hit her
mother in the head with the stick.A little while
later they were sitting on the porch, her mother was still trying to
get
rid of the pain in her head. By this time Mildred was a little scared,
and
then her mother looked up over at her and said? "You hit the wrong
hog!"
The day Mildred was buried set the record hight temperature at
somewhere
around 95 degrees... this was in February.
Mildred was 70 years, 9 months and 27 days old when she died.
