Dillworth Opera House Johnston Caleb
Dillworth was the second of eight children born to his parents, who moved
from Ohio to western Illinois when J.C. was about two years old,
locating in Vermont, Fulton County. J.C. enlisted service in the
Illinois Infantry in 1862 as a 1st Lieutenant. He was mustered in at
Quincy and was promoted to captain before the Civil War ended.
Dillworth Opera House hosted it's grand opening February 19, 1973. The opera house was opened with a ball. ("Denison in 1873 : February 29, 1873"; The Sunday Gazetteer, Sunday, March 17, 1912, pg. 2) The news reported that the two-story opera house was located on Houston street and was blown down by a wind or storm the day after it opened. The
obituary below states that Mr. Dillworth not only opened Denison's 1st
Opera House but put up other building in the city as well. He did
not continue his business nor remain long as a resident in Denison as
he died in June 1875 and is buried in Vermont, Illinois.
The
parents, Caleb and Margaret Dilworth are buried along with six of their
