Taken from A. H. Coffin

Mr. Coffin was born in Jamestown, North Carolina, Oct. 23, 1851, his parents were natives of North Carolina and Southerners for generations back. Father was a Dr. and Mr. Coffin was raised in the village he was born [in,] received his education at a private school, as the common schools were very poor. Left school when 18 years old, receiving only a good common school education.

First engaged in teaching in his native village about 7 months, then left for Texas, stopping at Sherman and remaining there (3) three months; then to where Denison now is, Aug. 19, 1872. Was employed by the MKT R.R. in the engineering department. Remaining with this company until 1874. And was then employed by the First National Bank of Denison as Bookkeeper for about 3 years. In 1877 was elected City Assessor and Collector, and reelected in 1878, being the 5th City Assessor and Collector. In 1878 engaged in the Real Estate business with James Leonard as partner and in 1880 dissolved and since has been in the Real Estate, Insurance, and Brokerage business, dealing mostly in inside property. Business has been very successful and is very much pleased with Denison. Thinks outlook better than it ever was.
