Harrison Tone
TEXAS DICTATIONS (Grayson County.) 1887. Department of Texas Denison TX Taken from H. Tone Mr. Tone was born in the state of
New York Aug 31, 1835. His parents had lived in this country about (30) years.
Father was a farmer and Mr. Tone was raised on a farm until, when 18 years old,
then he removed to Kentucky and taught school and went to college at the same
time, as he had to pay his own way. In 1859, Mr. Tone graduated under Horace
Mann at Yellow Springs, Ky. [in fact, Ohio]. In the fall of 1860 removed to
Arkansas and taught (1) one year. His health failed him and he returned to New
York and then [went] to Memphis and taught in the public schools, where he was
when the war broke out. Joined the Western Army and had charge of the Sanitary
Supplies, distributing more supplies than any man in the army. After the war
closed, went to Ohio, engaged in merchandising, remaining here about (4) four
years. Then removed to Kansas, Ottawa, a town of about 2,000 inhabitants, and
started a Democratic paper in a Republican District and failed. In Aug. 25, 1872, came to Denison,
Texas. There were then about 20 families around waiting to see where the town
would be laid out. Mr. H. Tone was sent out by the Mo. Pacific R.R. Co. at that
time, Stevens & Merrick being the main directors. Mr. Tone remained in the
employ of this Co. until 1872, when he then engaged in his present business,
Real Estate and Examiner of Titles. In 1874 he engaged in the fruit
business and put in 1,500 apple, peach, pear, and plum trees, and every kind of
fruit that he thought could be raised in this state, and 5 acres of
strawberries. This was done as an experiment but paid very well, considering
Mr. Tone was not much acquainted with the fruit business. In spring of 1874
[he] was elected Alderman and remained until 1886. Mr. Tone married in Cleveland,
Ohio, in 1864 to Miss Fanny Brown, has 3 children.
