HASH(E)- The Hash
family came
out of Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania. Tax lists
and land records show Joseph Hash there in 1734 and William in 1773.
Genealogists
believe this name is a variant of Hatch or Hache (the "s" and "c"
sounded
the
same). "Old" John Hash and family came down the Wagon Road
through
Shenandoah Co., Virginia, where the eldest son John, by the
first wife,
remained,
and the others moved on later to Montgomer Co.,
Virginia.
William Hash
and Thomas Hash, along with others are on the Enoch Osborne
militia list. Oral
tradition states that Hashes and Osbornes came into the New River,
Virginia
area together. Old John's sons:
-
Wm. Hash married Eleanor Osborne (daughter
of Ephraim)
-
Thomas Hash married Ruth
Sturgeon (Sturgill)
-
John Hash, by the 2nd wife, married Dosia
Sturgeon
-
A daughter Rebecca married Frank
Sturgeon; another daughter married a Hall
(grandson Richard Hall).
Burial place for William and
Eleanor is Bridle
Creek Methodist Church. On the 1815 list
Wm. Hash, Jr. had land on Bridle Creek and John Hash had land on Fox
Creek,
as did Wm. H., Sr.
My ancestor of "Old" John
Hash's
sons is Thomas Hash :

some point he had the rank of Ensign.
1798 - migrated to Green Co., Kentucky where
he lived for 18 years.
A John Hash is also listed on the 1800 census there.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thomas Hash was born February 13, 1756,
in the
Shenandoah Valley of Virginia,
the son of John Hash. Late research shows John was married twice.
Historians
are not sure if Thomas' mother was John Hash's first wife, Elizabeth
Sturgill,
or the second wife, Rebecca Anderson. I favor Rebecca
Anderson as
being his mother, because if his mother was a Sturgill, why would he
have
then married a Sturgill himself? He was married about 1777
in Grayson
County, Virginia to Ruth Sturgeon (Sturgill) who was
originally from
Orange County, Virginia. Ten children were born to this couple.
During the Revolutionary War, Thomas Hash was
listed as an ensign
in Captain Enoch Osborn's Company from Fincastle and Montgomery (now
Grayson)
Counties in Virginia on April 2, 1783.
*By 1800 Thomas had moved his family to
Kentucky, settling first
in Green County and later in Knox County in the southwest part of the
state.
He is listed in the second census of Kentucky, which was taken in 1800.
*In 1820 or 1821, Thomas and Ruth followed
their son Philip to Knox
County, Kentucky, but this proved unhealthy for Ruth, so the couple
started
back to Green County, their former home. Ruth Hash died in 1822 while
enroute
from Knox County to Green County.
*Deciding to relocate after Ruth's death,
Thomas and son Philip and
family journeyed to the Sangamon Valley in Illinois in 1822 where they
were pioneer settlers, living there for about 10 years. After the
Blackhawk
War, they moved to Rock Creek, between Petersburg and Springfield,
Illinois.
*In 1832 Thomas Hash moved for the last time,
with his son Philip
to what is now Lawrence County, Missouri. He was probably the oldest
settler
of Lawrence County, Missouri, for he was already 76 years old when he
moved
to Southwest Missouri. He settled on a farm northeast of where Mt.
Vernon
sits today and lived there for 16 years, until his death on December
25,
1848 at the age of 92 and was buried in what was known as the Robert B.
Taylor family graveyard (now known as the Old Taylor Graveyard),
northeast
of Mount Vernon, on the present Orin Carl farm.
*During our nation's Bicentennial (1976),
which
was 128 years after
his death, the Rhoda Fairchild Chapter of the Daughters
of the American Revolution, held a
special ceremony to
recognize his gravesite. This grave marking ceremony took place on
February
22, 1976, and included a formal dedication of a bronze plaque
commemorating
his Revolutionary service.

From the Lawrence County (MO) Historical
Society Bulletin, April
1976:
"Grave of Revolutionary War Soldier
Dedicated
by SAR
Eighteen direct descendants of Thomas Hash
were on hand Sunday afternoon,
February 22, for formal dedication of a bronze Plaque at the grave of their
ancestor, who served as an Ensign in the Revolutionary War. One hundred
seventeen persons attended the impressive ceremony, under the auspices
of the Rhoda Fairchild Chapter of the Daughters of the American
Revolution.
Mrs. Richard Campbell, Flag Chairman for the
Chapter, led the pledge
of allegiance to the flag. Invocation was given by State Senator
Richard
Webster. Dedication of the marker was led by Mrs. Oliver Garnes, State
Historian, MSSDAR. A flag was placed at the grave by Girl Scout Troop
No.
25 and the wreath was placed by Edward W. Wiggins, representing Post
No.
9 of the American Legion.
Historical facts pertaining to Thomas Hash and
his family were given
by Eugene H. Carl of the Lawrence County
Historical Society, followed by remarks from
Mrs. J.R. Langford
and Mrs. Edna Hash Green, direct descendants. State Representative
Robert
E. Young gave the benediction, which was followed by a three-gun volley
salute by the ROTC of Carthage High School.
Direct descendants present for the occasion
were: Mrs. Margorie
F. Langford, Bandera, Texas; Miss Gladys Fisher and Mrs. Mary Willis, San
Antonio, Texas; Mrs. Diane Causey and Miss Betty Fisher, Utopia, Texas; Leon
Carter and David Carter, Mission, Kansas; Mrs. Carrie Carpenter,
Gordonville,
Texas; Mrs. Edna Hash Green, Redlands, California; Mrs. Virginia Stroud Frieze,
Greenfield,
Missouri; Jerry Stroud and Mendi Stroud, Pierce City, Missouri; Frank W. Taylor,
Houston,
Texas; Joe M. Glasscock and Annis Hutcherson, Miller, Missouri; and Larry G.

and Brandon Stroud, Springfield, Missouri.

Ozark Mountain Chapter SAR placed an SAR
insignia marker and held
a dedication service on November 20, 1993 :
"REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIER
THOMAS HASH
BURIAL SITE : Robert B. Taylor Graveyard,
often
called the Old Taylor
Graveyard, northeast of Mt. Vernon, on the present Original Carl farm,
Lawrence
Co., Missouri."
The cemetery is located in the northeast
quarter of the southwest
quarter of Section 17, Township 28, Range 26, about 2 miles northeast
of Mount Vernon. This graveyard was established by
the Robert
B. Taylor family on what was originally their farm.
