Ralph Covington, Denison High

Ralph Edward Covington, 82, a native of Denison, TX, died October 29, 2012. Ralph was born December 31, 1930, to William Wilkes "Tex" Covington (1887 - 1931) and Anna Mitchell Covington. He graduated from Denison High School and Southeastern State College in Durant, OK. He served in the United States Navy from 1950-54, during the Korean Conflict. He was aboard the USS Boxer. Ralph’s father played professional baseball with the Detroit American League Team (Detroit Tigers) in 1911 as pitcher and was roommates with Ty Cobb. Ralph loved baseball and played in high school and in the Navy. Ralph began his training with architect, Donald Mayes, in Denison, and Brown and Chapman Architects in Sherman TX. Ralph was certified by the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners. He worked with architects Downing Thomas and Grogan and Scoggins in the Dallas area and was proud to have worked on the SMU Library. After working in Anniston, Alabama, he opened his own office in Denison, doing work for the city, county and local residents. He worked on many churches in the state of Texas, as well as the Sherman Library and Salvation Army. Survivors include his son, Jay Lowe Covington of Paris, AR, and the Miller Houghton family of Midland, TX. Another son, William (Bill) Edward Covington, passed away on January 22, 2013. Ralph was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Ray Covington. There will be a memorial service in Denison, TX, for both Ralph and Bill Covington this summer.
