Family of William L. Ashburn
William L. 'Bill' Ashburn is about age 20. He is still working for Arch Currie
and teaching school in the "weaning cabin" at Lonesome Dove near
Grapevine. The weaning cabin was the original Austin/Ashburn homestead in North
Texas. It is where the boys stayed before marriage and during their schooling,
kind of a frontier bachelor pad. He is "interested" in Mary Eliza but
she is only 15 at this time. | Mary Eliza Currie is 16 years of age. By this time, Bill and Mary were contemplating marriage |
Bill is about age 30. By this time he is the father of five and
living at Preston Bend on the Red River on the border of Indian Territory or
Oklahoma. If our information is correct, he was a half-breed Cherokee, his
mother being full blood. He sports a mustache in this picture which is odd for
an Indian, but in no other pictures does he have facial hair. |
By this time, Mary Eliza Currie Ashburn has had five children: Annie, Martin, Sarah, Sophie, and Paul.

The
picture of my Grandfather Bill Ashburn, Sr. as a young man and his wife
Mary Currie Ashburn along with their young family is interesting. Description:
1) Annie Archie is standing behind her father with her hand on her
father’s shoulder, 2) The eldest son, Martin, is standing near his
father’s right shoulder and just to his left standing near him is 3)
his white haired daughter, Sophie Porter Ashburn. Next 4) is my
father’s Sainted Mother Mary Eliza Currie Ashburn who is holding 5) my newly born Uncle, Paul Waples Ashburn. This was a picture taken circa 1889. My father Bill Ashburn Jr.’s birth is more than two years in the future, March 3, 1982.
