Clifton Pardue Garrett was born March 30, 1888, Nevada, Collin Co., Texas.  He and his parents & 9 siblings were living in Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory in 1900.  His parents and oldest three siblings were born in Tennessee.

I remember my grandfather very well.  He was a very tall, thin man and he always wore blue denim overalls.   His face was rather gaunt looking, as though he had no teeth, but I believe that he had teeth, it just was the way he looked.  I was told he was a farmer, but I don't remember seeing him actually farm.   Maybe he was retired by the time of my memories of him.   I do remember visiting his place in Blue, Oklahoma and was impressed to see that they had a tin roof on their house, no indoor bathroom, and a well outside from which we drew water. All in all, he was a great and funny man.  I believe that he came to my wedding in Louisiana in 1955.  He passed away the next year. - - - Margie Louise Garrett Hargis, granddaughter

Sallie Francis was born August 26, 1885, Grayson Co., Texas, daughter of Thomas Richard Taylor and Ellen Parley Lewis Taylor.  She married Clifton Pardue Garrett in Grayson Co., Texas on August 9, 1908 in Grayson County, Texas.  They were living in Precinct #2, Grayson County in 1910 with their 4 month old son, Ralph.

I remember my grandmother as a very quiet person, going about her work in a special way.  She was a short lady and always wore her hair in a bun.  I never knew how long her hair was because I never saw it down, as most women in her time.  She always wore a dress and then put on her apron when she cooked.  She and my grandfather lived in Blue, Oklahoma, just outside of Durant.  Whe we would visit her, she always made such a big breakfast.  She would go out into the backyard, wring the neck of a chicken, pluck and clean the chicken to fry for breakfast.  As a child, I found that rather strange because we never had fried chicken for breakfast. Sometimes we would have fried pork chops or sausages with our eggs and always homemade biscuits.  My grandmother did all of the cooking without running water in the kitchen.  How she managed all that is quite a task.  I don't remember what kind of stove she cooked all that food on, but it was wonderful. - - -

Clifton registered for the World War I draft in June 1917 at the age of 28.  He was described as "tall", "slender" build, blue eyes with light colored hair. He lived in Sherman, Grayson Co., Texas and was employed 5 miles northeast of Sherman.  He and Sallie had 8 children.  Clifton claimed exemption from service on account of being "physically unable".  His registration card for men born after April 28, 1877 and on or before February 16, 1897 notes his age as 54 and his residence as Durant, Oklahoma.

By 1920 the family was once again living in Hunter township, Choctaw Co., Oklahoma, including 4 children ~ Ralph, Inez, Swafford, and Willie Mae.  Living 3 houses away from them.
