The Stalcup Saga (as it pertains to Grayson County, Texas) Moses
Stalcup never lived in Texas. However, to a certain extent, he
contributed considerably to the settlement of Grayson County, Texas for
over 40 years. Moses and his first wife, Ann Hurd, were the parents of
6 sons: James Herd; Isaac H.; William Riley; John Wesley; Elias Martin;
and, Jasper L. (Jasper died in a childhood accident circa 1832).
Moses then married Nancy Cole and fathered 6 sons and 2 daughters: Sarah Elizabeth; Alford King (died at Vicksburg); Moses, Jr.; Levi Hurd; David J. (died as a released P.O.W. in Clarksville, Indiana); twins Christopher Columbus and Frances America; and, Joseph Cole. The two oldest children were born in Cumberland County, Kentucky; the other 12 were born on the family farm located near what came to be known as Mouse Creek (now Niota), McMinn County in eastern Tennessee. Six of Moses 14 children, as well as the widow Stalcup, eventually would come to reside in Grayson County - some for only a brief period of time - from 1856 to 1900.
