The Sunday Gazetteer
Sunday, October 8, 1905
pg. 4

James P. Haven, who has been associated with W.J. Mathis in the practice of law, has gone to Atoka to accept a position with the Southern Trust Company.  Mr.  Haven will act as an attorney for the company and will have charge of all legal matters pertaining to the land department of the Southern Trust Company.  This is a big step forward for Mr. Haven who is one of the youngest of the legal fraternity in Denison, but those who know Mr. Haven will not question his ability to discharge in the most competent manner the new responsibilities that have fallen to his lot.   He is a gradaute of the law department of the Texas State University.  He is a young man of excellent address and possesses all those sterling traits which go to make up a successful lawyer and useful citizen.  His professional record will bear the test of the closest investigation.  He has shed honor and luster upon the profession which he has selected for a livelyhood.  In losing him we lose one of our most promising and popular young attorneys.  The Gazetteer wishes Mr. Haven a prosperous career.  The people of Atoka may well feel proud of the new acquisition, both in a legal and social sense.

CONDENSED HOME NEWS
W.J. Mathis is a legal bull dog, he never lets go.  While coming down Crawford street the other day, we saw Mathis seated in the tail end of a delivery wagon, watching a house.  It seems that the tenant was non-est, had vamoosed the ranch.  Attorney Mathis had papers to confiscate some goods of the tenant who was a peddler.  When we left, Mathis was still watching for the arrival of the peddler and he had his wagon ready to carry away the goods.
