Capt. Fears was born Jan'y 4, 1839, in Henry Co., Ga., his parents were old residents of this country. And his ancestors on both sides were Southerners for generations. Was born on a farm and raised there also, attending the schools in the district and working on the farm at the same time. After leaving the common schools went to Griffin, Ga., and attended school there some time. And then went to Bethany College, remaining there 3 years and graduated in all branches with the exception of Greek.

After graduating taught school a few months in private family and studying law at the same time. Was admitted to the practice in 1858, locating at Jonesboro, Ga. And remained there in the practice until he joined the army 10th Georgia Regiment. And remained with same regiment until Battle of Gettysburg. And was discharged as he was laid up with rheumatism. And started a company and was made Captain of it. After the war went to Atlanta and remained there in the active practice of his profession until 1872, then came to Sherman, Texas. And remained there until 1883 in the practice of his profession. While in Sherman was Mayor of the city 5 years.

Was married in 1866 to Miss Tidball whose father was a prominent lawyer. Has a family of 3 girls and 3 boys. Wife died 2 days after coming to Denison.
