  Cynthia B. Philips 1840 - 1925 Mrs.
Cynthia B. Philips, generally known as "Aunt Puss", was one of the
older and best beloved of the old timers of this community. Her
death is the cause of sincere regret on the part of all who knew
her. She was 85 years, one month and 18 days of age at her
passing. Funeral services were held at the Christian Church at 2:00
p.m. this afternoon, November 5, 1925, conducted by the Rev. Leo
Johnston. Rev. C. B. Fielder and Rev. F. C. Dick assisted in the
services. Interment will be at Warden cemetery. Pall-bearers will
be as follows: Active - Dan Sneed, Tom Umphress, Norman Gray, Roy
Craighead, Jobe Coulson and Jim Fifer. Honarary Pallbearers were: George Fifer, J.M. Lewallen, Joe Jackson, Dr. William Veazey, Dr. J.M. Slaughter, H.A. Parish, J.A. Douglas, A.T. Leslie, Rush Pitt, and Mr. Ed Brown. Mrs. Philips was born August 6, 1840, at Gallatin, Tennessee, daughter of Joseph and Evelyn Kelly. In 1856 at the age of sixteen she came to Texas, settling in the Mantua community. Shortly after she confessed her faith in the Saviour and became a member of the Christian Church. In 1856 she married Josh Ferguson, who died during the Civil War. To this union were born two children, Jenny and Nancy Jane. In 1874 Mrs. Ferguson was married to Joseph Philips. To this union three children were born, Robert J., Mary Claudia Evaline, and Emma. Robert and Claudia, of Allen, survive. Research notes: There may be some discrepancies in the obituary regarding Cynthia's children. One version states her first two children (Ferguson) were a son, James, and a daughter, Jennie. These children remained with her sister, Mary Evalina. Cynthia and Mary Evalina were the daughters of Joseph Kelley and Evelina Pentacost. Joshua Ferguson's parents were John and Eva Hahn Ferguson.
