Lucile Allen Head was born April 15, 1917 to Mary Belle (Mamie) Anderson Allen and Elry Thurman (E.T.) Allen, Sr. She graduated from Whitesboro High School in 1934. She attended North Texas State Teachers College where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1938 and received her Masters of Education (NTSU) in 1966. She began her teaching career in East Texas, at schools in Hallsville and Marshall. In 1942 she married R.B. Head, Jr. who was serving in the U.S. Army. Lucile was active in First Presbyterian Church, Whitesboro, where she was baptized as an infant, and where she faithfully served in many capacities as choir member, President of Presbyterian Women, Elder on the board of Sessions, and lifetime teacher of children in Sunday School. In Whitesboro Lucile was active in the community and was named Humanitarian of the Year in 1994. In 2010 she received theWISD Leadership Award. She was an 80-year-member of a Chapter of A of P.E.O., a philanthropic educational organization benefitting women and girls. In 1985, she and R.B, along with her brother Mike Allen and his wife Mary Ann, established the Allen-Head Lecture Series at Austin College. It continues to this day. In 1979, Lucile retired from teaching after 29 years in Whitesboro, teaching fifth and third grades. She remained active in the Retired Teachers Association for over 30 years.
Lucile is precedeased by her beloved R.B.
She is survived by two daughters, Judith Anderson Reedy (Rick) and Sally Burke Light (Chico). Her grandchildren include Matthew Reedy (Amy), Jared Light (Christi), Alyssa Harper (Ryan), Amy Hermes (Scott), Blake Reedy (Kathie), Ross Reedy, Ben Light; sixteen great-grandchildren; one niece; three nephews; one brother-in-law, William T. Head, Sr.; and several extended family members and loving friends.
Lucile delighted in her family! She found great joy in life in a number of ways: traveling, playing bridge, hosting gatherings; her table was alwasy open. She was a good friend and mentor to many. Her life set an example from which many people have learned and grown. Her priorities were rooted in her faith in God, expressed first in the context of her family, and lived out in her teaching and civil live.
Lucile died at home on May 1, 2016. There will be a memorial service at First Presbyterian Church, 200 N. Union, Whitesboro on Tuesday, May 3rd at 11 a.m. A reception will follow at Mamie's house directly across the street from the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to be made in Lucile's memory to First Presbyterian Church, Whitesboro, Texas; the philanthropic educational organization P.E.O. c/o Linda Harris, P.O.
