Randles was born December 21, 1850, son of William Maxwell Randles and
Mary Jane Gass Randles. He married Nannie Gideon Thompson on
February 18, 1882. Together they had eleven children, nine of
whom were alive in 1910 - Gideon William, Henry Beacher, Rachel Lula,
John Howard, Oscar Bennie, Addie, John and Margaret. James was a farmer in Tennessee before moving to Texas. After moving to Texas, he kept a boarding house; his son, Gideon William, was a salesman for a grocery store. By 1920, James M. Randles owned and operated a restaurant. James was 71 years of age when he passed away in 1922; burial was at Oakwood Cemetery in Whitesboro along with his wife and sons, Gideon William, Oscar, Henry and John Howard; and daughter, Addie Burba Hudgens.
