Palestine Daily Herald Palestine, Texas Tuesday, November 30, 1909 pg. 1 OFFICERS WILL CONTEST For the Big Reward Offered For the Capture of Gus Sartin - Sheriff and Chief of Police (Herald Special) Sherman, Texas, Nov. 30 - A legal contest between Sheriff Sam Rice and Police Chief Henry Despain for the big reward offered for the capture of Gus Sartin, charged with murdering Mrs. John Winkleman of Fayetteville, Arkansa, was assured today when it became known that both officers were searching for and located Sartin in California about the same time. Despain went to Little Rock this morning to obtain extradition papers for Sartin, who yesterday admitted his guilt. Rich will leave for California tomorrow with Texas requisition papers. By Associated Press SACRAMENTO, CAL., Dec. 1., - Gus Sartin, wanted in Arkansas for the alleged murder of a woman, for which crime he is said to have received ten thousand dollars, committed suicide in the city prison today by hanging. Besides the murder charge against him in Arkansas, Sartin was wanted in Texas on charges of robbery. A big reward was offered for his capture and a row was in progress at the time between a Texas sheriff and city marshal as to whom it belongs. One of the contestants had Arkansas extradition papers, the other requisition documents from Texas. SACRAMENTO, Cal., Dec. 1., Gus Sartin, wanted in Arkansas for alleged murder and in Texas on charges of robbery, committed suicide in the city prison here today by hanging. MAY CONFLICT OVER THE BODY Sartin Will be Buried Either at Sherman or Sacramento Special Telegram to The Express SHERMAN, Tex., Dec. 1., - Messages were received at the office of both the Sheriff and chief of police here this afternoon confirming the report of the suicide of Gus Sartin in jail at Sacrament, California, held there for the murder and robbery of Mrs. John Winkleman at Fayetteville, Arkansas. Private messages from a friend of the dead man in Sacramento say that he will bring the body here for burial. Tom Sartin, father of Gus Sartin, has expressed the desire that his son be buried in Sacramento and that he will pay the expense. Tonight he wired Sheriff Sam Rich, who will be in Sacramento tomorrow; "Identify Gus Sartin sure. Wire full particulars, including his belongings, and await further instructions." Gus Sartin was born in White Mound in Grayson County, twenty-five years ago, and was reared on a farm. He came to Sherman when he was 21 years of age. HE SLEW AND ROBBED WOMAN Killed a Mrs. Winleman at Fayetteville, Ark., and Took $10,000 LITTLE ROCK, Ark., Dec. 1 - Sartin was wanted at Fayetteville, Arkansas, on the charge of killing Mrs. Winkleman at her home there in August and robbing her of $10,000 which she carried in a belt around her waist. She was murdered in the room of a boarder, who disappeared following the murder. Sartin is alleged to have been the boarder. Governor Donaghey today issued requisition for Sartin and made special request that he be turned over to the Arkansas authorities instead of Texas. A reward of $6,300 was offered for him. (Herald Special) Sherman, Texas, Dec. 2. - Both Chief of Police Henry Despain and Sheriff Sam Rich will claim the reward for causing the capture of Gus Sartin, who committed suicide yesterday in jail at Sacramento, California, after admitting that he murdered Mrs. Annie Winkleman. Probable . . . the reward offered for the arrest of Sartin will be effected. Relatives of Sartin here today engaged counsel. They claim that the dead man had $2,200 on deposit in a Sacramento bank, and anticipate a legal fight for the possession of the same. Dec. 3., - Chief of Police Henry Despain returned from Little Rock this morning, and declared that he will not claim the reward for the capture of Gus Sartin, who committed suicide in the Sacramento jail after admitting that he murdered Mrs. Annie Winkleman of Fayetteville, Arkansas, "I claim no reward for the capture of the dead man," Despain said. Sheriff Sam Rich is in Sacramento, where he went to claim the prisoner and the reward. The Abilene Reporter Abilene, Texas Friday, December 3, 1909 MAN WANTED FOR MURDER CAPTURED IN CALIFORNIA SHERMAN, Nov. 29, Chief of Police Henry D'Spain today received a message from the chief of police at Sacramento, Calironia, to the effect that Gus Sartin, arrested there recently on a charge of murdering Mrs. John Winkelman at Fayetteville, Ark. now admits his guilt. It is alleged that Sartin was to have received ten thousand dollars for his work. D'Spain has been commissioned agent for the state of Arkansas by the governor to return Sartin on requisition. The hunt for Sartin extended over the entire country. Special to Daily Bulletin: Sherman, Texas, Dec. 8 - Sheriff Sam Rich arrived here this morning with the body of Gus Sartin, who committed suicide in the jail at Sacramento, California, after confessing the murder of Mrs. Annie Winkleman of Fayetteville, Arkansas. Sartin's father Tom Sartin, took charge of the body. It was learned today that before Sartin was arrested he bequeathed to Laura Denton, his sweetheart, $2,000, and the money is deposited in a bank at Sacramento. The woman arrived here today. Rich will demand the reward offered for Sartin. Record and Chronicle Denton, Texas Thursday, December 9, 1909 Arkansas Officers, Too FAYETTEVILLE, Ark., Dec. 2 - The reward offered for the capture of Gus Sartin, who confessed to the murder of Mrs. Annie Winkleman of this city and ended his life yesterday in the jail at Sacramento, California, was $2,000 cash and twenty percent of all the money recovered. It is alleged that Sartin received $10,000 after the crime. Texas and Arkansas officers have gone to Sacramento and a hot contest is promised. Sartin's bank account of $2,200 will probably be involved as part of the money recovery. Sheriff Sam Rich recently returned the body from Sacramento, California, where Sartin committed suicide in jail. The governor of Arkansas has not yet authorized the payment of the reward for Sartin's capture.
