FINAL RITES FOR MRS. ALEXANDER Special to The Democrat Gunter - Mrs. Martha Jane Alexander, 94, died Wednesday at 10:30 p.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.T. Davis, 4 miles north of Gunter in the Whitaker community. Funeral services were conducted Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Whitaker Cemetery, with Rev. T.A. Irby of Gunter officiating. Interment was in the cemetery under the direction of Talley, Sherman. Mrs. Alexander was born April 8, 1845, in North Carolina, a daughter of Capt. T.P. and Kathrine Copney Harshaw. Her father, 3 brothers and her husband, the late Daniel L. Alexander fought in the Civil War. Mrs. Alexander with 4 more children came to Texas 2 years before the end of that war. They walked behind an ox-wagon from Missouri to Paris. All the children had the smallpox on the road, she recalled at one time, but there was no fatality. When her family arrived in Texas, they settled within a mile of Denison. She was married to Mr. Alexander in the Whitemound community at the age of 25. Then they moved to Collin County. They lived there 8 years and returned to Grayson County, where she has since resided. Mr. Alexander died about 16 years ago. She had been a member of the Baptist church since she was 15 years old. Surviving relatives include 3 daughters, Mrs. M.E. McConnell and Mrs. Davis of Gunter; and Mrs. J.F. Burnett of Tulsa, Oklahoma; 2 sons, George Alexander of Gunter; and M.G. Alexander of Sherman. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Miss Nova Bowen of Sherman is a niece. Pallbearers were to be Joe Bowen, Reece Bowen, C.L. McConnell, Virgil Martin, J.C.
