Gunter, Texas - James Richard Anderson, 72, of Gunter passed away Wednesday, April 5, 2017. He was born May 1, 1944 in Sherman, Texas, son of Marhsall "Shorty" and Marguerite Anderson. He was the middle of three children and a lifelong resident of Gunter. After graduating from high school in 1962, he worked at Taylor Tank, ran the Texaco Station, and farmed. In 1965 he joined the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam conflict. After this tour of duty, he became a firefighter and was spent 28-1/2 years in the Sherman Fire Department. After retiring, he worked in plant operations at Wilson N. Jones Hospital in Sherman for 16 years, finally retiring on October 15, 2015. James married Linda Payne of Gunter on August 22, 1974. Richard was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Andrea Ruth Clayton. He is survived by his wife; brother, Marshall Anderson and wife, Janye, and their children of Houston; son, Michael Riley of Howe; daughter Kristy Hulsey and husband, Jeff, of Gunter.; and three grandchildren, Stephanie Riley, Austin Riley, and Alayna Hulsey., Richard received the following medals for his service in the US Navy: National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Armd Forces Medal of Korea. Graveside services were held Saturday, April 8, 2017 at the Whitaker Cemetery in Gunter, with Scoggins Funeral Home directing.
