W.A. "Woody" Clancy, III 1951 - 1964 Honey Grove Signal-Citizen Friday, October 23, 1964 pg. 1 DENISON YOUTH IS GUNSHOT VICTIM A pecan hunting expedition in Fannin county ended in tragedy for a Denison family shortly before noon Saturday when the 12-year-old son was accidentally shot and died a short time later in a Bonham hospital. William Atwood Clancy III, 12, of 722 West Florence, Denison, died at 11:15 a.m. Saturday in the M&S Hospital, Bonham after being shot in the head just above the right ear by a .22 calibre rifle as he clambered up the side of a ditch in the Lake Davey Crockett area on Highway 100, north of Honey Grove. Young Clancy and his friends, Willy Joe Garrett, 15, of 902 Wild Street, Denison, had gone hunting while the Clancy family picked up pecans. Garrett was carrying a .410 and Clancy a .22 rifle. As they crossed a ditch, Garrett handed Clancy the guns to hold as he went down and as Clancy reached for the guns, the .22 was discharged. The boy was rushed to the M&S hospital by a Cooper-Sorrells ambulance and was barely alive when he arrived at 11:05 a.m. He was pronounced dead 10 minutes later. Mr. and Mrs. Clancy and their other children, Julia Ann, 14, Charles Jeffery, 4, and Lisa Jane, 3, were picking up pecans a short distance from where their son and brother was fatally shot. Officers said the Garrett boy had crossed the ditch and Clancy was handing the guns to him when the .22 rifle was discharged in some manner. Sheriff Hoyt Ivey and Deputy Sheriff Charles Leslie made the investigation and provided a police escort for the ambulance to Bonham. Young Clancy was born Dec. 1, 1951, at Rockport. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Monday at Earnhart Funeral Chapel, Whitewright, with interment in Whitewright cemetery. Survivors in addition to his parents and brother and sisters are his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Chancy, Sr., of Denison and Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Watkins of Whitewright.
