The Whitewright Sun Thursday, January 19, 1922 pg. 1 Mrs. Laura Carter, wife of J.M. Carter, died at her home here last Friday afternoon following a stroke of apoplexy Monday night of last week. She never rallied after being stricken. In a short time all of her children were at the bedside and remained there until the end. Mrs. Carter was born in the Canaan community, north of town, September 21, 1860, and lived t here until 11 years ago, when she moved to this place with her husband. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.P. Montgomery, pioneer settlers of Grayson county. Mrs. Carter had been a member of the Presbyterian Church since childhood and lived a true Christian life. The funeral service was held at the Presbyterian Church Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J.F. Fender, who was assisted by Rev. Jap Manton of Sherman. The service was attended by a large number of sorrowing friends and relatives, many of whom were from out of town. Interment was at the City Cemetery. The floral offerings were large and beautiful. Mrs. Carter is survived by her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Elliot Thomas of Tom Bean; and two sons, Raymond Carter of Gunter and Dr. Wilbur Carter of Sherman. A sister and two brothers, Mrs. C.L. Manning and S.H. Montgomery of this city, and Bob Montgomery of Florida, also survive. The active pallbearers were J.E. Webster, Dr. C.P. Johnson, W.P. Vaughn, W.B. Hestand, J.W. WIlson, Guy Hamilton, W.H. King, C.W. Bryant, D.S. McMillin, F.E. Douglas and G.C. Gillett. The official board of the Presbyterian Church were honorary pallbearers. .The Whitewright Sun Thursday, April 24, 1924 pg. 1 JAMES MALONE CARTER CLAIMED BY DEATH Death claimed James Malone Carter, a pioneer resident of this community, at 8:45 o'clock Monday morning of this week. He was at St. Vincent's Sanitarium at Sherman, where he had lingered for two weeks following an operation, when the end came. Mr. Carter was 68 years old, but at the age of five his parents brought him to Texas from Tennessee. The family first located at Bonham, but the deceased spent most of his life in the vicinity of Whitewright, residing for many years on a farm north of this place. His wife, who died here about two years ago, was a sister of S.H. Montgomery of this place and of Robert Montgomery and Mrs. Mae Manning of Jacksonville, Florida. The surviving children are Dr. Wilbur Carter of Sherman;, Raymond Carter of Gunter; and Mrs. Elliott Thomas of Tom Bean. Upon his retirement from active farm work some ten years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Carter moved to Whitewright and occupied a substantial home on West Spruce street until Mrs. Carter's death. He then went to Tom Bean to live with his daughter. He was the last surviving member of his father's family. The body was brought to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas at Tom Bean Monday afternoon and Tuesday was conveyed to this city. At four o'clock that afternoon the funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church, of which church the deceased had long been a member and at the time of his death an elder. The edifice was filled to its capacity with friends of the deceased townsman and his surviving children. Pot plants and flowers shaped and wreathed into symbols of love and remembrance filled the available space around the bier. Rev. W.A. Stuckey, pastor of the local Methodist Church, read from the Scriptures, and Dr. J.F. Fender and Rev. Joe Nicholson, Presbyterian ministers, spoke of the life and eternal assurance of the deceased and all that may elect to follow in the path of his earthly sojourn. The interment was at the City Cemetery in east Whitewright. Monday, February 4, 1929 pg. 1 RAYMOND CARTER IS CALLED BY DEATH - DIED SUNDAY NIGHT Funeral at Gunter Tuesday Morning at 10 o'clock It is Announced Raymond Carter, mention of whose illness has been made in the Favorite, died at a Sherman sanitarium Sunday night. The end had been expected for several days, since it was apparent from the start that he was fatally stricken. For several years Mr. Carter lived in Bonham. He was a prescription clerk at Claypool's drug store. He went from this city to Gunter, Texas, where he was engaged in business for some time. Mr. Carter was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Carter of Whitewright, where he was reared. He is survived by his wife and two children, Annie Laurie, a daughter, and George, a son. The funeral service will be held at Gunter Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. The remains will them be taken to Whitewright for interment. Raymond Carter had many friends in Bonham who will learn of his demise with sorrow. Thursday, April 2, 1931 Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Simmons Carter, wife of the late J.R. Carter, who died at the home of her daughter in Lufkin Monday, were held at the Methodist Church here Tuesday afternoon. The services were in charge of Rev. L.G. Hagard, pastor of the Methodist Church. He was assisted by Rev. J.T. Purvis, pastor of the Central Christian Church and Rev. J.L. Truett, Baptist minister. Burial was at the City Cemetery. Mrs. Carter was born in Travis County near Austin, July 21, 1855, and died March 30, 1931 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Duke of Lufkin, with whom she made her home for the past year. In 1875 she married Joseph R. Carter. To this union two children were born, George M. Carter of Okmulgee, Oklahoma; and Mrs. Henry Duke, both of whom survive. Mr. and Mrs. Carter resided in the Canaan community, north of town, for a number of years. In 1884 they moved to Whitewright and for many years Mr. Carter was public weighter of this precinct. Mr. Carter died January 21, 1924. Mrs. Carter was a noble Christian. As a neighbor, she was thoughtful and helpful and her life was thickly set with golden deeds that are sweet to dwell upon. She had been a member of the Methodist Church since the age of 14. She loved her church and truly served her Maker. In her passing her friends have lost a true and loving friend and her children a kind and devoted mother. Friday, November 15, 1957 pg. 1 FORMER BONHAMITE DIED IN CLARENDON Funeral services will be held in Clarendon Saturday for Mrs. Bertha Carter Wilburn, former Bonham resident, who died at her home there, Thursday, November 14, 1957. The body will be brought to the Earnheart Funeral home in Whitewright Saturday and lie in state until 2 p.m. when graveside services will be held at the Whitewright cemetery. Mrs. Wilburn will be remembered as Mrs. Raymond Carter by her Bonham friends. She is survived by two children and several other relatives.
