Caldwell, 81, manager of the Penn lumber yard at Tom Bean, died Wednesday afternoon at Wilson N. Jones hospital, Sherman, after an illness of two weeks. He had been in the hospital since Friday. Funeral services were held at Tom Bean this afternoon. Mr. Caldwell came to Texas from Virginia as a young man and had lived in the Tom Bean community for about 60 years. He had been an employe of the Penn lumber yard, owned by Emmet Penn of Whitewright, since 1913. He is survived by his wife and several children. The Whitewright Sun Thursday, December 7, 1939 pg. 1 Mrs. Cordelia H. Caldwell, 78, widow of J.H. Caldwell, died at her home at Tom Bean at 5:45 p.m. Friday after a short illness. She had been in declining health since the death of her husband September 28, 1938. Funeral services were held at the Tom Bean Baptist Church at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, conducted by Rev. C. Chumbley of Howe, Rev. Howard McSpedden of Pilot Grove and Rev. W.P. Cure of Tom Bean. Burial was at Vittitoe Cemetery. Pallbearers were P.H. Luby, W.C. Cole, T.G. Trotter, A.K. Halliburton, A.N. Smith and R.D. Benson. Mrs. Caldwell was born in Missouri February 8, 1861, a daughter of the late Joel and Sarah Grindstaff. She was married to Mr. Caldwell June 20, 1880 and had lived in Grayson County most of the time since. She was a lifelong member of the Baptist church. Surviving are seven daughters, Mrs. T.H. Miller, Mrs. Alma Tate and Mrs. W.A. Tallent of Tom Bean; Mrs. C.L. Carter of Aberdeen, Washington; Mrs. E.E. Ashford of Crescent City, California; Mrs. C.E. Bonewitz of Comanche, Oklahoma; and one son, L.C. Caldwell of Amarillo. She was the aunt of Mrs. J.B. Hamilton of Whitewright.
