"Uncle Andy Thomas"
Whitewright, Tex., May 2- Died April 27, at his home, four miles west of this city, "Uncle Andy" Thomas at the age of 96 years. He came to Texas in 1834, and was conspicuous in the early Indian fights in Fannin and Grayson Counties. On one occasion while building a cabin near Bois d'arc Creek, on a place now known as the Joshua May farm, the Indians attacked him and his son. He kept them at bay with an ax until he could reach his rifle when he soon made them beat a hasty retreat. His son was wounded and Mr. Thomas carried him to Fort Bonham (now the City of Bonham), on his back, being followed by two Indians nearly all the way. At another time he had a close call with Indians, about two and a half miles west of here, but he succeeded in killing two out of three of them. He is well known by all the early settlers of North Texas.  At the time of his death, he had in his possession an ax handle and a rifle.  The ax handle is stained with blood.  Mr. Thomas was buried in Kentuckytown cemetery [sic].
