Thursday, March 13, 1958 pg. 1 Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Earnheart Funeral Chapel for Joe Stephens, 82, who died at his home in Whitewright Monday at 10:20 a.m. after an illness of 8 weeks. Rev. Fred Waldrop and Rev. Bob Scarborough officiated with interment in Vittitoe Cemetery. Pallbearers were Houston Darwin, John Biggerstaff, Robert DeBerry, Ray Key, Raymond Stephens and Wesley Brown. Mr. Stephens was born in the Kentuckytown community, west of Whitewright, April 13, 1875, 3 years before the town of Whitewright was established. His parents were John and Ann Stephens. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Tom Bean Baptist Church, which he served as a deacon for 26 years. Survivors include his wife; 7 sons: Percy and Zot of Chillicothe; Herd of Rockwall; Tracy and Cears of Arlington; Ivy Joe of Midland; and Don of Dallas; 4 daughters: Wilma Lou of Whitewright; Mrs. Randall Freeman of Honey Grove; Mrs. John Rice of Bells; and Mrs. Henry Norman of Tom Bean; and 18 grandchildren.
