G. W. Pope, A Pioneer
Dies at Whitewright Home
  
G. W. Pope, a pioneer resident of near Whitewright and well-known in Sherman, died at his home Tuesday afternoon after an illness of some time.
Mr. Pope was the father of D. M. Pope, local Katy agent; Mrs. Randolph Roberts and Mrs. George Jay of Sherman.  He was 86 years of age at the time of his death.  He had resided in the Whitewright Community since shortly after the Civil War, in which he fought as a Confederate soldier.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 10 o'clock from the Christian C hurch in  Whitewright.  The services were conducted by the Rev. J. F. Fender, Rev. Carter, and Rev. Majors of Whitewright.  Internment was at Kentuckytown.
News of Mr. Pope's death was a source of real sorrow to many friends in Sherman and elsewhere in the county and is passing that of another of the early citizens who have had much to do with the character of this section

Pioneer Resident of Whitewright is Dead
Special to The Democrat - Feb. 14, 1923 - George W. Pope, 85 years old died at his home here yesterday afternoon.  He settled in Grayson County before the Civil War and had spent the greater portion of his life in and near Whitewright. 
He is survived by his wife and the following children:  Mrs. Tom Adkins of Lubbock, Texas; Mrs. Sid Hudspeth of Caddo, Okla.; Mrs. J. W. Pender of Greenville; D. M. Pope, Mrs. Randolph Roberts and Mrs. R. H. Jay of Sherman; Mrs. M. Montgomery of Clovis, N.M.; C. W. Pope and Mrs. R. P. Gordon of Whitewright. 
The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at the Central Christian Church of this city.  Interment at Vittitoe Cemetery, near Kentuckytown.

Funeral services for D.M. (Max) Pope, 41, general agent for the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railway lines here, who died Sunday at 9 p.m. of double pneumonia, were held Tuesday at 10 a.m. from the Central Christian church, attended by a throng of friends and conducted amid a large floral display.
Dr. Roy H. Biser, pastor, and Dr. Conway T. Wharton, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, said the last rites.  Burial was in Vittitoe cemetery near Kentuckytown, directed by the Dannel-Scott company.
Active in various phases of civic affairs, Mr. Pope had been ill for about ten days, and since Christmas day had been kept alive with oxygen.
His affiliations were many.  He was a member of the Masonic lodge, Scottish Rite, York Rite, Shrine and of the Central Christian church.
Mr. Pope with his wife, the former Miss Faye Eatherly, came to Sherman in 1921 from Whitewright, where he also held a position with the M-K-T lines.
Surviving Mr. Pope are his widow, his mother, Mrs. G.W. Pope of Whitewright, a brother, a nephew, and five sisters, all of whom are at the Pope home at 823 West Fischer Avenue.
Pallbearers were Kay Kimbell, B.B. Wilbanks, Frank Thompson, Jess Eubank, Clifford Hardwicke and John Livingston.
A quartet composed of Fred Cunningham, John Reid, Ferd Moore and Lloyd Moore of Whitewright, sang three selections at the church.
