Funeral services for Rev. Cleophus Chumbley, 63, were held at the First Baptist Church in Sherman at 3 p.m. Sunday with interment Tuesday in the Kentuckytown [sic] Cemetery.  The service was conducted by Rev. Nat Farley of Whitesboro, assisted by Dr. J.A. Ellis, pastor of the Sherman church.  He had been ill 28 days and died at 9 a.m. Friday at a Sherman hospital.  He was residing in Whitesboro at the time of his death.  Rev. Chumbley resided in the Kentuckytown community for a number of years, and had served as pastor of several of the rural Baptist churches in this section.
The burial service was postponed until Tuesday so that the son in service could be present.  It was first set for Sunday afternoon, but after a message was received stating that the son was enroute home the time was changed to Tuesday.
Deacons from the Southmayd and Macomb Baptist churches, of which he had been pastor for the last 18 months were pallbearers.  The body remained at the Chumbley home in Whitesboro until 1 p.m. Sunday.
Rev. Mr. Chumbley was born May 7, 1880 in Kentucky, a son of Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Chumbley.  He came to Texas at the age of 12.  He married Miss Florence Inez Davis on December 21, 1905 in Grayson County.  After her death on May 18, 1940 [sic], he married Mrs. Gladys Turner on February 14, 1943 in Whitesboro.
Rev. Mr. Chumbley attended the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth.  He was ordained in the ministry in 1919.  He had served as pastor of the Howe Baptist Church for 13 years before going to Whitesboro.
Survivors include his widow; 4 sons, Sgt. John C. Chumbley in the Army overseas; Paul Chumbley of Ladonia; Albert Chumbley of McKinney; and Rev. Leon Chumbley of Saratoga, Texas; 4 daughters, Mrs. Alma Ruth Holcomb of Ft. Worth; Mrs. Morris Holcomb of Alto, Texas; Mrs. Edward Clark and Miss Dorothy Chumbleyof Dallas; 2 stepchildren, Mrs. Gene Stephens and Billy Turner of Whitesboro; 6 sisters, Mrs. Joe R. Dean of Wichita Falls; Mrs. H.L. Huddleston of Howe; Mrs. S.B. Marner and Mrs. S.O. Blount of El Paso; Mrs. D.W. Haliburton of Slaton; and Mrs. Clyde Gibson of Whitewright; 2 brothers, Sgt. Bob Chumbley in the Army overseas and George Chumbley of Denison; 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
