Texas - Daisy Louise Smith England was born in Tom Bean, Texas November
6, 1923. She was the only child of Walter Lee Smith and Vilantia Lewis
Smith. She passed away from this life to be in the presence of the Lord
on Thursday, March 14, 2019 at Mullican Care Center in Savoy.
Services were held Monday afternoon, March 18, 2019 at Scoggins Funeral Home in Van Alstyne. Daisy graduated from Tom Bean High School in 1941. During World War II, she went to work as a clerk-typist at Perrin Field. She later worked for Mrs. Tucker Foods in Sherman as a bookkeeper until she married L. B. England in 1947. She worked a short time as a clerk in the county clerk's office. Before she married she took art from a local artist. She loved color itself. In late life she still liked to work with color in making quilts. Daisy was a Baptist her entire life. She truly believed that Jesus was her Saviour. Survivors include 3 children: Carol Sue Sommers and husband, Bill, from Princeton; Mark Lynn England and wife, Kerri, from Sherman; Penny Kay Bassham and husband, Gary, of Savoy; 6 grandchildren: Karen Montgomery and husband, Richard Fortuna, of Charlotte, North Carolina; Clint Montgomery and wife, Donna, of Sherman; MIchelle Bassham of Bells; Jordan Reeves and husband, Andy; Davis Bassham of Sherman; and Morgan England of Sherman; 5 great-grandchildren, William and Brandon Brewster of Bells and Ian Montgomery, Lincoln Reeves and Lila England, all of Sherman. Funeral services were under the direction of Scoggins Funeral Home, Van Alstyne. Howe L.B. England was born near the Grayson-Collin county line in the community of Mantua in Collin County on September 24, 1918. He was the second child of Lee Lumpkin England and Cynthia Caroline (Callie) Bradshaw England. He is survived by six sisters, Kathleen Spencer, Joyce Lange, Nadine Hollensed, Lurline Walker, Goldie Gaston, and Shirley Davis and preceding him in death are 2 brothers, Boyd England and Archie England. He passed away from this life to be with the Lord on 4/29/14. The family will gather for lunch from 12 to 1, visitation will be from 1 to 2 and services will be held at the Scoggins Funeral Home at Howe Texas on 05/04/14. Graveside services will be held immediately following at the Van Alstyne Cemetery. L.B. went to school all over Grayson County moving from farm to farm during the Great Depression. His younger brother, Boyd, joined the Navy and L.B. joined shortly thereafter. They were on the same ship, the West Virginia, and were onboard when the Japanese bombed them while anchored in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The West Virginia sank with Boyd below deck in the engine room. L. B. was topside readying to go on liberty and was able to go down the sea ladder and swim to the Tennessee as it was moored to the dock. L.B. was in the Pacific through many battles and was in Tokyo the day that the Japanese surrendered. Later, L.B. went to New York and from there he was deployed on a mine sweeper in the Mediterranean. Eleven mine sweepers left and only three survived, his ship narrowly missing a torpedo. L.B. was honorably discharged after serving 6 years in the U.S. Navy in March 20, 1946. L.B. married Daisy Louise Smith in 1947. Three children were born by this union: Carol Sommers of Princeton, Tx, Mark England of Sherman, Tx, and Penny Bassham of Savoy Texas. L. B. has six grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.
