Rites Friday for Mrs. Emerson

  Van Alstyne - Mrs. Mattie Fulton Emerson, 80, died at her home in Van Alstyne at 6 a.m. Thursday after a long illness.  Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. Henry Vail, pastor, the Rev. Harrison Balter of Sherman and the Rev. Frank Johnson, pastor of the Van Alstyne Baptist church.
  Interment will be in the Van Alstyne cemetery, directed by Fox-Fanning.  Pallbearers will be Luther Kinard, Glen Douglas, Cage Hunter, Orr Stinnett, Moore Cartwright and Conrad Schweiginfer.
  Mrs. Emerson was born during the civil war, March 6, 1863, at the home of her grandmother east of Van Alstyne and lived there until 20 years ago, when she moved to Van Alstyne.  She was a daughter of D.W. and Elizabeth McKinney Fulton and a great-granddaughter of Collin McKinney, early Texas patriot.  She received her early education at Mantua, riding eight miles horseback and fording streams around Van Alstyne to attend school.  She was a member of the Methodist church for 65 years, being active in church affairs until her last illness, and having one branch of the missionary society names "Martha" after her.
  Survivors are three sons, Taylor Emerson of Big Spring, Fulton Emerson of San Angelo and Zac Emerson of Van Alstyne; three grandchildren whom she reared.  Miss Mattie Ruth Emerson and Mrs. Howard Cameron of Dallas and Staff Sergeant Dowling Emerson of post headquarters army air force at San Angelo; four brothers, Dr. Sam Fulton of Atoka, Okla., Z.M. Fulton of Seminole, Okla., Perry Fulton of Kanawa, Okla., and Jim Fulton of Muskogee, Okla., a sister, Mrs. Henry Denton and a niece, Miss Jo Culpepper of Van Alstyne.
