Cartwright 1862 - 1939 Van Alstyne Leader March 16, 1939 Page 1 Dr. T.S.Cartwright, 77, Dies Here This Morning Had Served As President of State Dental Board of Examiners from 1910 to 1918. Was President of Cotton Oil Company Here for 25 years and had been a director since its origin in 1901 Dr. Thomas Speed Cartwright, 77, died at his home here at approximately 8 a.m. Thursday, following a heart attack about 4 a.m. Wednesday. He had been ill since August, 1937, when he suffered a stroke and was removed to a Dallas sanitarium where he stayed until late this winter. He was removed from the sanitarium to his home here and his condition was thought to be greatly improved at the time. Funeral services are to be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the residence here with the Rev. Leo Johnston, pastor of the Oak Cliff Christian church, Dallas, and the Rev. Lloyd Mottley, pastor of the Van Alstyne First Christian church, officiating. Interment will be in the Van Alstyne cemetery with Fox-Fanning in charge of arrangements. Burial services will be under the auspices of the Mantua Lodge of Van Alstyne with J. M. McLemore acting as Worshipful Master. Dr. Cartwright was born January 19, 1862, in Adair county, Kentucky. He came to Texas and settled in Van Alstyne in 1888 where he opened a dental office soon after his arrival here. He was married three times. His first wife was Mrs. Lee Pattie, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. S.W.Moore of Van Alstyne. She died in 1893. His second wife was Miss Mattie Smith of Honey Grove. She died in 1903. He married Mrs. Mary Clark Moon of Hutchins, Texas, in 1904. She survives him. Dr. Cartwright leaves four children, three daughters by his second wife: Mrs. Byron Standifer of Midland, Texas, Mrs. J.J.Shaw of Wills Point, Texas; and Mrs. Jack McCullough of McKinney, Texas; and one son by his first wife: Moore Cartwright of Van Alstyne. A brother, Dr. A. Y. Cartwright of York, South Carolina also survives. He was a member of the Mantua lodge of Van Alstyne for about 19 years. Dr. Cartwright graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1885. He retired from active work in his dental office here in 1918 after serving the Van Alstyne public for 30 years. He devoted himself to large agricultural interests here since then. He was a Democrat all his life. He was President of the State Dental Board of Examiners of Texas from 1910 to 1918, under the administrations of Gov. O. B. Colquitt and Gov. James E. Ferguson. He was known as "Dad" to those on the board, due to his long tenure of that office. He was president of the Van Alstyne Cotton Oil Company for 25 years until his death. He was also a director and promoter of that concern since its beginning back in 1901. He served for a number of years as a member of the board of trustees of the Van Alstyne Public Schools. He served the city of Van Alstyne as Mayor for two terms just after the turn of the century. He has often humorously mentioned that he was ushered late the world by the sounding of hundreds of guns -- just like a prince. It so happened that he was born on the day of the Battle of Mills Springs in Kentucky and his home was only a few miles from where the battle was taking place. Large Number Attend Funeral Here Friday For Dr.T.S.Cartwright Funeral services were held here at 2 p.m. Friday at the residence for Dr. T.S. Cartwright, 77, who died at 8 a.m. Thursday at his home here. The Rev. Leo Johnston, pastor of the Oak Cliff Christian church, Dallas, officiated, assisted by the Rev. Lloyd Mottley, pastor of the Van Alstyne First Christian church, and the Rev. Frank Johnston, pastor of the Van Alstyne First Baptist church. Burial was held in the Van Alstyne cemetery under the auspices of the Mantua Masonic lodge of Van Alstyne with J.M.McLemore acting as Worshipful Master.
